What I don’t understand is why EPN allowed that after-meeting 2 lectern press conference. HO is not an equal, not another head of state. A side by side appearance in a casual setting would have been more appropriate.
If EPN didn’t actually expect Trump to accept the invitation, that would explain a lot of how the public side of it was bungled. But if Mexican politics is as porous as the US kind, any tape will be in public within a couple days and we’ll know for sure.
True. But you gotta admit that Trump got the better of him. It was all upside for Trump, and all downside for Pena Nieto. If Trump wins, Pena Nieto will have helped to elect Mexico’s worst enemy since James K. Polk.
I think we know the answer to that “if.” Trump used this guy like condom.
I can’t decide whether Trump now has the big mo’ that could overtake Hillary or if, last night, he just managed to lose Arizona.
Now we have the spectacle of this Mexican “Presidential” dolt’s CYA.
He refused to speak up when it would have mattered, leaving it up to Trump to DENY it all. Could he be more cowardly or incompetent?
And while at it, “el agravio e indignación” means outrage and indignation, not grave indignation
I can just imagine Trump’s response to the Mexican Foreign Minister: “Well, I’m richer than you so I can …” I’ll leave the “…” to the reader.
It was a courtesy Pena Nieto never expected to be taken up on. But it was his own fault.
Now the blowhard is bloviating in Cincinnati. That boy does get around I must say. Still I cannot stand to listen to him speak. I find I want to grab heavy objects and heave 'em at my TV when I hear him speak. Every utterance drips fascism and everything my dad fought against in WW2. Should this creature get elected I fear for the continued existence of my country.
…and I thought it was only me…
the foreign minister was in Milwaukee at the opening of a new Mexican embassy when the announcement of Trump’s visit came down
What is this “editing” of which you speak?
I would assume that the entire purpose of the visit was to make Trump look presidential in a short photo op. There is a well known tradition in Mexico called La Mordida. During the 80s one of their Presidents, who are restricted to one term, was giving his farewell speech, a very emotional one. Suddenly from the audience of his country’s legislators, detractors began howling like dogs (Mordida means bite) because this president was reputed to have bitten off a lot of graft and socked it away in his offshore bank accounts. I think this is the answer to the mystery of why Pena Nieto arranged this show. His country’s Milenio newspaper is roundly critical of him this AM. Every single Op Ed piece.
Well, on the plus side, Enrique Peña Nieto may have finally killed off the odious PRI as a viable political party in Mexico. Hopefully Trump has a similar effect with the GOP.
Canada has various requirements involving education and funds you must bring with you to permanently emigrate there and apply for citizenship. Millions of U.S. citizens have much to contribute to their industry and culture. I think they’d be well advised to at least partially relax their entry requirements should Trump get elected. Their nation would find a great many U.S. citizens willing to work and live among them, peaceably and productively.
You’ll note that both podiums had the seal of Mexico and that while there was a Mexican flag behind Peña Nieto there was no US flag behind Trump. There was no indication that Trump was a representative of the United States. Of course, all the US flags in Mexico may well have already been burnt by that time.
A vague dream from the long ago journalistic past, something TPM seems not to consider necessary, is all…
But in fairness, Donnie did bring a sample of his proposed wall to serve as a backdrop. Very classy Mexican marble.
That race is going to come down to GOTV efforts and efforts at the polls, particularly in heavily Hispanic districts. If Dems can do a solid job of registering and getting Hispanics to the polls…AND keep republicans from throwing away tens of thousands of ballots like they do every election in AZ, Kirkpatrick wins.
Well, he isn’t an official representative of the United States, merely a private citizen. So protocol dictates that his trip not be treated like an official visit. Because it wasn’t one.
You mean you thought that wasn’t obvious?
