Discussion: McConnell Wants Mueller Probe To 'Wrap Up,' Falls In Line With Trump

The investigation won’t wrap until the fat lady sings. She’s running to hit her mark, but the enormous weight she’s carrying is slowing her down a bit. Rest assured, though, her performance will be worth the wait and will bring down the house.

Is that supposed to be the next WH Press briefing?

I’m starting to fear the institutional mechanisms that in normal times would protect the integrity of a Special Counsel investigation are breaking down. I also think there’s a tipping point to be reached where the disintegration of those protective mechanisms suddenly results in Mueller’s dismissal or ruinous sabotage. One day he’s chugging along, working, and the next he’s done, via Trump or Congress or both in tandem.

Party First! Mitch’s seat is safe until 2020 and he doesn’t want his majority to be dragged down by the Mueller investigation in the final months of the election season.

“The “wrap it up” quip puts them all squarely in line with President Donald Trump, who has been desperate for the “witch hunt” to end for months.”

I disagree with the author. It means, “My God, don’t you have enough already that you can give us to get this guy out of here?”

I’m an optimist.

“If the [Inspector General] is through, why can’t the Mueller investigation finally wrap up?” McConnell added.

The IG had a predetermined agenda, found a couple things that supported it and wanted to put it out asap to combat the shit against Donald popping up in Mueller’s report every day?

We can’t even get the “institutional mechanisms” to get Scott Pruitt out of office even in the light of obvious illegal activity. The Republican party will live in infamy.

Seems to me that there are years worth of damp slimy rocks to be turned over.

You can take it that way or not. You tell me.

I agree with McConnell,

Mueller should wrap it up right now, and start the proces of removal of Donald Trump from the White House and the presidency…maybe shrub the historial record, too, if that isn’t too Stalinesque…

Hmm… How about “the memory of the Republican Party will live in infamy”?

I know. I get the fear. it isn’t irrational. But I see a race to two alternative tipping points, not a straight line to one of them.

What I think about the Mueller investigation is, they ought to wrap it up,” he said on a Washington Examiner podcast. “It’s gone on seemingly forever, and I don’t know how much more they think they can find out.

If the [Inspector General] is through, why can’t the Mueller investigation finally wrap up?” McConnell added.

previously

Gregory pressed McConnell on whether he would ask his fellow Republicans to put a halt to calls for impeachment and comparisons to a President Nixon-esque cover up. But McConnell would only say that he thought the suspicions around the situation warranted an investigation.

What I think we ought to do is complete the investigation and find out what exactly happened,” he said.

“I can speak for myself, and what I’m saying is, this is an investigation into what happened in Benghazi that is worth conducting.”

Clearly, McConnell said, the talking points were “not accurate.”

Getting to the bottom of that is an important investigation,” he said.

but wait, there’s more

"They would have been prime targets for cyberattacks. But I don’t know what the law is. I think the administration is taking a look at that. And hopefully, we’ll find out in the coming weeks just what the legal situation is with regard to that," he said.

Yes indeed. I’m very impressed that Mueller has been running the only leak-proof operation in Washington, but doing so does open a crack for nonsense like this to worm its way in to the discussion without every listener immediately calling “bullshit” on McConnell. Lack of recent indictments does not equal lack of incriminating evidence, and of course McConnell is extremely aware of that.

I’m fairly confident that if it really does look like the investigation will be shut down – as opposed to general grumbling noises politicians make to try and have it both ways, which is kind of how I’m interpreting this – Mueller will release about a dozen indictments the next day. I’ll be a lot more concerned if and when McConnell actually advances legislation to shut down the special counsel.

The deliberate obuscation is mind-boggling. Why not just say “well, the doctor stopped the bleeding in your leg wound, so we’re just going to ignore that chest wound you have.Time to wrap it up.”

That was different, they were investigating a Democrat.

You may be correct. However, the forces arrayed against Mueller are vast. All of the Executive, over half of Congress. SCOTUS would fuck up trying to boil an egg, so I’m not counting on the Judiciary to be the cavalry. Dems in Congress are too busy mopping the piss out of their Ferragamos to be any help. Name me the entity that backs Mueller’s continued work when the fight to fire him breaks out? Who or what has his back, and are they empowered to foil any attempt to fire him? I dare say “the law” is likely worthless as far as saving him.
