Well the gop makes a big deal of something any dem does…and the media including the so called liberals turned it into a scandal when their isn’t one
This will change no one’s mind.
Bill is still dumb.
Lynch diffuses the situation by acknowledging poor judgment.
In response to their conspiracy theories being undermined, right wing heads explode.
Why is it that here on TPM you can’t be a Clinton supporter and have an opinion of them that is less than fawning?
You don’t have to agree with me, but, I happen to believe that I can respect and be a fan of someone without being blind to their faults and missteps.
In my opinion, YES, MY OPINION, the Clintons tend do be victim of hubris.
You are entitled to yours.
Comments sections are not based only on facts, they are comprised of many diverging OPINIONS on a subject.
That’s what makes it interesting.
Attorney Generals don’t essentially recuse themselves over smoke and mirrors. They both should have known better. Appearance of conflict of interest is absolutely to be avoided. Disproving shady dealings is so difficult, next to impossible, That you’ve got to just avoid putting yourself in that position.
I do NOT know what is up with Bill. Trash talking Sanders supporters, nakedly campaigning just outside a voting place, now this.
Tell it to Dick Cheney.
There was no conflict of interest here - it just seems that the GOP and probably the die hard Bernie bots are trying to cause one to spring into being by claiming there is.
The appearance of impropriety is meeting with the spouse of someone of whose investigation Lynch is heading.
And guess what? LYNCH AGREES. She basically recused herself. She knows she fucked up and is responding in an ethical manner.
It blows my mind that people are in this thread insisting that nothing was wrong here. AG’s don’t recuse themselves for nothing. Y’all have some serious blinders.
You can, most assuredly.
But you’re way off the mark here.
It was a casual social meeting between old friends.
It’s only an issue because of the right-wing frenzy about anything to do with the Clintons, and because the Clintons are held to a standard that doesn’t apply to anyone else.
Of course Bill should have thought about the ramifications, but no one is always that careful, least of all Bill Clinton. That doesn’t show hubris; it shows a bit of careless thinking…
You can’t prove there was no conflict of interest. You don’t even know. Neither do I. You can prove a conflict of interest (some evidence of quid pro quo for example) but it’s nigh impossible to disprove. That’s why the appearance is to be avoided. Again, AG’s don’t essentially recuse just for kicks. Lynch knows she messed up. She admits it in words and action. This is to be commended. The majority of people in this thread are being insane, stomping their feet, and covering their eyes and ears.
I am so beyond sick of the knee-jerk response to the Clintons’ repeated foibles being excused as “Bush/Cheny did it too!” Cheney being a giant war profiteer dickhead isn’t an excuse!.
You know what the moral equivalent of “Bush/Cheney did it too” is? “Good enough for Bush/Cheney, good enough for me.”
Led the country into a manufactured war? It was good enough for Bush! Torture POWs and violate the Geneva convention? Good enough for Bush! How about we just get the charade over with and try to pass a constitutional gay marriage ban if this is the low standard we are going to hold ourselves to?
Just because the Republican nominee is worse than GWB doesn’t mean I want to reelect GWB. You can call out bad behavior by Democrats and still vote for them. We were all here going nuts about GWB a decade ago for the same type of behavior. Cronyism. Graft. Obstruction. Pay to play.
Clinton herself is under investigation? This is big news!!! please share the link showing that.
Except that now you’re comparing the Clintons to the Bushes.
Ok, sure you can have all the opinions the Hillary haters can hand you.
So let’s be clear: if there was an appearance of a conflict of interest it is not on Bill Clinton, it’s on Lynch.
Surely after allllll these years you can see why those of us who do support Hillary look at such leaps to judgment about her and Bill with a slightly jaundiced eye = there have been too many of these non-scandal scandals to count.
And Bill didn’t trash talk Bernie supporters, he argued policy with them. You tipped your hand with that one.
I don’t think Bill Clinton has the temperament to be just a one-of-a-hundred junior Senator without the perks of seniority. Besides that, would he want to live in a state where he might be electable?
So, according to Republicans, the BEST way to complete a conspiracy is to meet a co-conspirator on the tarmac, with lots of public witnesses…
Sheesh.
I mean, c’mon. How ridiculous is this? If Lynch and Clinton wanted to conspire, there are these weird things called ‘e-mail’, ‘text messages’, ‘snapchat’, etc.
What sort of conspirator would pull his/her plane up next to the other and conduct their business that way???
I don’t get why she is doing this apologizing for meet up she didn’t start bill came to her plane…I just think she didn’t want to be rude to him, after all he is a former president
Well, yes. It’s ironic that after so many years of unfounded attacks, the Clintons have as a result been able to shrug off some really substantive issues. The Bill Clinton pardons were horrendous, Clinton’s lied for half a a year about the email scandal, and at the very least acted unwisely. And the Rajiv Fernando position is probably worse than any of Bush’s cronyism, and that was terrible.
Still voting for her. She’s running against Trump, for goodness’ sake. But if the Republicans were running 2008 McCain, or 2012 Romney, I’d be really hard-pressed to pick the lesser of two evils here. Speaking as a lifetime Democratic voter.
I dunno. I try to analyze my own preconceptions. The email scandal looked like nothing. But I changed my mind after reading about it, no thanks to TPM’s lack of reporting on it.
They wouldn’t but the gop has to find something to distract everyone from the disaster that is their nominee
This is the downside of touting yourselves co-Presidents the first time around.
OK,
I agree to disagree.
As you aid by spreading the same old worn out claim.
How about focusing on the positive, would that be so bad?
You’re over reacting and if only slightly so, what good does it do at all.
I’m late to the conversation, but if you get a chance please catch Lynch’s conversation with Jonathan Capehart … it was engaging but addressed the key questions like: What were you thinking!!!
