Discussion: Local TX GOP Recruits Poll Watchers With Claim Of 'Voter Fraud' In Dem Areas

Based on this story the Republican Party now owns voter intimidation. They can no longer decry the Trump campaign as responsiblefor fomenting distrust of the outcome of a legitimate election. It appears there needs to be a major Justice Department investigation into the conspiracy of voter suppression by the Republican Party.

The House is having a huge impact all by itself these days. I know it’s based on Congressional districts, and that also controls who controls each polling place, which is also starting to matter a great deal.

It’s Texas.
It’s Tarrant County.
You know, Fort Worth-where the ‘west’ begins.
And where intelligence has taken a breather since we were all younger…

I will take umbrage with that and point out that Ft. Worth has world class art museums - more than one.

And the university where I got my undergraduate degree.

What’s not intelligent is judging places by stereotypes.

Would love to see a few black “poll watchers” challenging voters in a white voting district. You know, just to make sure everything is legal and there’s no voter fraud.

Were I the Governor of a state, I would have my National Guard ready to deploy as necessary on election day, I fear that this election day will be like no other before it.

I’ll be working as a poll worker (assistant election judge) in Tarrant County. The Democratic Party sent us a email letter today advising us workers to come to a special orientation concerning our rights, etc, if we should run into these kind of poll watchers. I guess I’ll be bringing my laptop also, perhaps to live blog an incident should it occur.

Exactly right. How can they legally intervene when they see a black person or an Asian or someone in a sari or whatever vote? That’s all they will be able to observe.

But really, what else is there to see for these amateur Trump “poll watchers”? They can’t look over anyone’s shoulder when they sign their name or vote. Real poll watchers have certain things to check and observe that these people have no idea about.

You have your cell phone camera and video too.

Anyone asked Reince Priebus if the RNC is going to repudiate this, and tell the Tarrant County GOP to stand down?

I’m not so sure about that. I imagine the governors of some states, including Texas, would just love to send national guard troops to anywhere with reports of voter fraud, whether substantiated or not.

Sorry Tena.
From a visitor’s point of view I’m glad I don’t have to live there.
And, may I assume you’ve actually read the summary of the article in question?

We have election judges, one from each party, at each polling place plus an undetermined number of registered poll watchers. The watchers can stand near the registration table. They are NOT allowed to interact with the voter and can only raise issues with the judges.

I live in Tarrant County, so a few observations.

– I can’t believe this hasn’t been brought up, but this is the same Tim O’Hare who gained national notoriety as a mayor of a town requiring renters to ensure they weren’t renting to people in the country illegally! This isn’t his first rodeo at pushing the limits:

http://www.dallasnews.com/news/farmers-branch/2011/01/07/farmers-branch-mayor-tim-o_hare-will-not-seek-re-election

– The northern half of the county is one of the nation’s biggest concentration of Tea Partiers and he won his election this year promising to be more active and stick the GOP’s tentacles into all races, even non-partisan ones. Tarrant overall is a demographic make-up of Texas (and I can guarantee the state results this year will not differ from the county by a few points), but the GOP leadership is almost completely radicalized and has purged moderates from its rank. Crazy Groupthink like this isn’t likely to be vetted by anyone with common sense before they throw stuff out there publicly like this.

Tarrant County liberal here, too. You can’t believe the crap conversations I have to put up with at work every day. Let me just summarize the majority of Texan republicans for you…a bunch of fucking dicks.

Well, it only directly influences House races, but it has far-reaching consequences in many directions. Right now, for example, our do-nothing Senate majority leader is off the hook because the House is in such disrepair. If Dems controlled the House, McConnell’s life would be a nightmare because the House would actually be passing stuff.

But we have only ourselves to blame, no? In general, Dems don’t show up in midterms so many States are managed by the GOP and they work very hard to ensure they keep that majority at all costs. Don’t count on candidates for these jobs to change the rules either. It needs to be taken over by a neutral, non-political third party, if one could be found.

These self-appointed clowns have no right to challenge anyone or examine anyone’s credentials.

I think the Justice Department would be well-advised to nip this sort of thing in the bud and send in armed federal marshals.

Link to report instances of voter intimidation or harrassment by these Republican “poll watchers”. PASS IT ON!
