I would (a) expect them to rebel and not vote for this, (b) I would have loved to have cut ICE funding, and © that was not either possible (short of shutting down the government to “defund ICE” which would have been a disaster) nor politically advisable.
So vote against it, just hopefully be there for votes when you are needed (unlike the Tea Party). Great to have more ideas/perspectives, just keep your eyes on the ball that getting to the needed votes is more important that ideological purity.
Democrats need to show they can govern after 8 years of the Grifter party clown car…
They’ll learn how business gets done soon enough.
A little disappointed we’re giving the R’s $3b+ with no offsets on one of their shitty pet giveaways…after them playing that card for 8 years on every $ Obama wanted to spend.
In the end it’s probably a decent overall package and the consequences of not making a deal are pretty dire for a lot of people.
I get where these 4 are coming from and Ilhan is my rep and I support her and I support their stand. Presumably the votes will be there so it won’t be a deal breaker.
Four, huh? That’s not much of a left wing.
Yeah, but it makes the point without bogging things down Freedom Caucus style.
It’s not much of a revolt either.
Oh, I don’t have problem with their votes. I’m just not a big fan of hyperbole in the media.
I think they know. I’m sure Nancy Pelosi has given them permission to stage this mini revolt. If she needed the votes she would have brought the big hammer down.
Yes that is what I think too.
Will you stop with these damned “AP” headlines, TPM? I was expecting 150 Dem Reps throwing Molotov Cocktails and shooting the House walls down with AK-47s.
What next? “4 Frosh Dems Can’t Find Paper Clips! Dems In Disarray!”
Very true.
FIFY.
Cue NYT headline, “Dems in Disarray!”
Anyway, they’re not wrong. But this should get passed. We’ll get another kick at the can in September I believe.
Well this was a huge victory over Trump. Perfect is aways nice, but at some point you have to be real. Most democrats are real (or at least I hope and pray they are).
And lets give a little example of the “reality” here. in 2007 Bush and Kennedy put together a compromise immegation reform which would have legalized 12 Million people. Let me repeat that, 12 million people. All of the dreamers and a lot more (their parrents, etc).
it died in the senate because 15 Democrats voted against it, and one independent, Bernie Sanders, joined them. Kennedy in defeat told his left-wing colleagues that perfection was not possible, and predicted that “The situation is going to get worse and worse and worse.” see e.g. https://www.nytimes.com/2007/06/28/washington/28cnd-immig.html
Had Sanders and 15 “vote for perfection” Democrats not voted no we would be in a hell of a lot better place than we are now.
For sure. She knows how to count and do math, unlike the GOP who is getting an earful after that awful tax bill.
Their votes aren’t needed. They are better served by protesting Trump’s ugly immigration policies.
Everybody has played the immigration game. It makes great politics and not solving the problems make the oligarchs funding congress a lot of money.
I think it is time we solved the immigration problem. it can be done the old fashioned way, both parties giving a little and both parties getting a little. Compromise isn’'t a dirty word.
They need to look in the back of the desk drawer. I always find paper clips there even in brand new desks. Don’t get me started on staple refills though, I don’t where they end up.
To think “compromise” is somehow a dirty word, and not how things actually get accomplished is jejune. I’m all for the good fight, but at some point you have to re-open the government. Both sides should seem unhappy with the result, so you know they’ve done their best, right?
Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez voted against reopening the government last time too. If she were one of the conferees, I imagine we’d be facing another shut down. Why am I not a fan of her?
