And wherever did Kim Davis get the authority to change the wording on the legal documents that are issued by her county department? Don’t they have to be OK’d by a higher authority, like maybe the judge, a commission or the legislature? She’s a clerk, a recorder, not an arbiter.

She’s authorized it by allowing it. Your argument is that she’s allowing it but doesn’t really mean it. That’s just not gonna fly. It’s one or the other. If she was sincere in her non-authorization, she’d be prohibiting her deputies from issuing licenses, and she’d pay the consequences. She can’t have it both ways, because third parties will be harmed by her insincerity. As far as licences being issued by the clerk, that will be taken to mean the clerk or her deputies, as they are apparently given that charge in the case of her incapacity to do so for whatever reason; like if she came down with shingles or some such shit. The business of the clerk’s office wouldn’t shut down with her absence.
Any court is going to tell her to fuck right off.

I don’t understand this maneuver. By her own admission she altered the paperwork for the licenses, and now raised doubts about the validity of those licenses – because of her own alterations.
Isn’t this an admission that she violated the court order and her own oath of office? Isn’t this actionable with another court ruling and finding of contempt?

Many years ago, I had the non-pleasure of litigating against a “Christian” law firm that specializes in handling cases for various fundie institutions (broadcasters, schools, churches, etc.) It was a profoundly unpleasant experience. They’d literally just make shit up and allege it. If it would be convenient if a thing was true, they’d invoke the magic words “on information and belief” and it was true to them. They really, really, really did seem to believe that their righteousness transcended the bounds of mere temporal law and rules.
