Agreed. But it didn’t fuck up in a vacuum. The context of Texas and its refusal to accept Medicaid expansion must be considered. I’m sure it’s like trying to prove that global warming causes any one particular weather event. But I don’t doubt that the health care atmosphere in Texas is colored by “The State of Texas” as embodied by its current administration.

The man didn’t have health insurance. They sent him home, initially, knowing full well he might be really sick. I suppose they hoped he’d go to another hospital.

I’m going to hold my nose and vote for Hagen this term. There are fair number of things she does right, but I often get the impression it’s always through the filter of reluctantly adhering to her party for continued political support.
When she says retarded shit like this, I just get a cold, dead spot inside me where I desperately wish and look for a better Democrat to replace her. This is only one example of her pandering to the right wing fear machine in an attempt to scoop up a few ‘undecided’ votes … which, unfortunately in the social composition of North Carolina, is a pragmatic and necessary concern.
I’ve been a resident of North Carolina since 1992, and I have come to utterly loathe the state, despite the fact that there are some pretty decent people to be found in some enclaves. But the extreme right-wing, TeaBagging fucknuttery that permeates about 80% of the population is just disgusting and depressing.
And the stupid. Dear fucking God, the stupid is so fucking thick and deep. This position and statements by Hagen exemplify the level of stupid and ignorance among the general population. A complete lack of critical thinking skills and awareness of the reality of the world through Mayberry-colored looking glasses.

All you people criticizing others who are concerned about a pandemic remind me a lot of those who shot down anyone critizing the invasion of Iraq in 2003. You sure aren’t leaving yourself much rope if things get significantly worse. We need free thinkers, not just know it all critics who shout down dissenting opinions. It’s curious how so many are so sure of themselves in regards to Ebola, a virus we know very little about.

I agree with you wholeheartedly about the state of NC politics but leave Mayberry out of it. Andy Griffith was a good solid liberal as well as Ron Howard. Back in the 80’s NC Democrats wanted to recruit Griffith to challenge Helms for the senate seat. He was actually polling 10 pts ahead of the excrable Helms. Sadly he did not run. It would have been a fun race.

Texas not accepting Medicaid expansion caused the hospital to hustle a Liberian suffering from Ebola out of the ER and into the general public with nothing more than Tylenol and a prescription for antibiotics because he didn’t have insurance and the Texas hospital was so fucking concerned about getting stuck with the bill that they “overlooked” the fact that he was recently in West Africa and had a dangerously high fever of 103.
This is squarely on the administration of that Texas hospital.

Somebody, please explain this to me. Republicans devote every fiber of their being to constraining, impeding, and hindering the operation of the Federal gov’t, yet, with the arrival of one Ebola infected guy in Dallas, they are all calling for a MASSIVE gov’t response and gov’t solution to a problem that, traditionally, they would be arguing should best be handled by the free market. How come, now, all of a sudden, they want the entire Health Care System to be Federalized, and are calling for the gov’t to seal off the borders?
Why did gov’t stop being the problem and start being the solution?
Is because they are incredibly stupid? Is it really that simple?
