Discussion for article #228984
Next to increasing penalties for sex offenders, the safest thing for a politician to call for is a travel ban from countries with ebola. Why don’t most public health professionals think it wouldn’t be effective?
The Ripple Effects of a Travel Ban Could Make The Ebola Problem Even Worse
Not to mention that it wouldn’t work. The guy who died of Ebola in Dallas came from Belgium. His flight didn’t originate in Liberia. So are you going to ban all flights from Europe?
And he had all the proper papers, and you’d be surprised at how many Liberians are American citizens. Their civil war produced a lot of them who had fled to the US to be with relatives.
""It is clear that the piece-meal approach to contain this outbreak is not enough. "
Based on what? What makes that “clear”? 5 incidents out of 325M people in the country?
The only people currently calling for a travel ban are politicians and cable news talking heads not healthcare professionals. That should tell you something.
There’s a 75 percent chance the virus will be imported to France and a 50 percent chance it will hit Britain by October 24. Then what?
You can make a donation to Doctors Without Borders here.
I just tried to explain these very things to my “hair stylist” who was mad at Obama for not stopping the flights. She also said that Oprah should fund the anti-Ebola fight over there, as it is “her country”. Her friend, who also watches CNN, is stocking food and water for when Ebola gets here.
We’re screwed, but it’s not from Ebola.
Actually, it’s TWO Americans infected here, both in the same hospital, which apparently dropped the ball on personal protection equipment for the two nurses. TWO. Probably will be some more, but hardly worthy of the sensational coverage and fearmongering. Which you even get on, e.g., NPR and MSNBC. And such craven pandering from politicians.
Regardless of whether or not it is medically or strategically justified, or if it would be effective or not, the failure of Obama to call for, at least the appearance of, a travel ban/some kind of quarantine will ensure a Republican majority in Congress, next year. IMO
Can we get a hysteria ban, too?
I would like to meet the politician who isn’t calling for a travel ban.
Ratings are down.
Actually I heard that the world health organization says over a million west Africans might be infected in the next 6 months. If so that could easily be 1/2 million dead.
Hopefully Big Pharma will see a financial reason to develop a vaccine by then.
I do on a monthly basis. Fabulous organization.
I am sure they wouldn’t care of every african died
The two patients treated by the government are both doing fine. It is the State of Texas who fucked up
Actually it is the hospital that fucked up, and I mean big time. There should be a serious investigation of the decision making at the Dallas hospital. Notice, none of the other cases treated in America has led to additional infections.
Crouching Tiger, Cowering Democrat.
Yet another profile in courage.
I’m not sure. I agree that hysteria is alarming, I’m not sure that it has wings to last to the election. But if there’s a spike in cases, you’re probably gonna be right.
idiots. This disease has caused exactly 1 death in the US, and there are less than 10,000 cases worldwide. The people responsible for this freakout are destined to abide in the darkest corners of hell.
“…travel restrictions…”
Big, Republican government.
