Gift rules for a President are weird. If Angela Merkel gave Trump a set of gold cuff links he’d have to turn them over to the government. Saudi Arabia can lease out half of Trump Int’l Hotel for a week to the tune of $750,000 and it’s ok.

It’s taken awhile to get this far. I would think they’ve got a decent case that can now be backed up with the losses that competing businesses can show from the past year.

But I have no sense of how tricky the “ruling on the Emoluments clause” hurdle is.

Trump’s lawyers essentially contend the Saudi Ambassador could come out and say the hotel was specifically chosen to curry favor with Trump during a weapons sale negotiation and that would be legal and above reproach.
