Discussion: Judge Dismisses Dodge City Polling Site Lawsuit

Anyone want to bet on whether those plans for in-town polling places come to fruition before 11/15/20?

Screw you for that headline, TPM.

They essentially settled the case, although I would have preferred it if the ACLU had obtained an agreement for judgment requiring the 2 polling places instead of just voluntary dismissal.

Yeah, deceptive headline.

Or close again, just a few weeks before then?

Also, screw AP for that lede.

AP gets most of the lameness credit, but I wish TPM would not run these when they are this bad.

Both the headline and the article are misleading and incomplete.

Screw TPM for not recognizing that the AP pieces damage the TPM brand and don’t serve readers well.

“The ACLU sued Cox in October, arguing that moving the polling site made it more difficult for the city’s majority Hispanic population to vote. Cox said she moved the site because of construction at the traditional polling site at the civic center in the mostly white part of town.”

I respectfully disagree. I read the article, not just the headline, and I learned something about the case (the settlement) that I didn’t know before.

I agree with the others: an utterly misleading headline. Is TPM not allowed to swap in their own headlines on AP stories?

Hopefully the ACLU has something tied down.

A better headline and a bit less clickbait sounding would have been: ACLU Drops Dodge City Lawsuit.

Appears they do not. But they know what they are doing, so hopefully this goes through.

Voluntary settlements are often due to written, enforceable settlements — they’re not mutually exclusive.

The headline should be “ACLU voluntarily dismisses suit pursuant to settlement.” The AP are right-wing hacks.

“Cox said she moved the site because of construction at the traditional polling site at the civic center in the mostly white part of town.”

right. she was just in it for the infrastructure. a complete coincidence in timing. shit happens.

I read the article too and found out the case was settled. Yes, it is good to know that.

But this was the final line of the article, “Cox said she moved the site because of construction at the traditional polling site at the civic center in the mostly white part of town.”

From other reporting at that time IIRC there were no signs at all of any work being done on that civic center.

So, that’s just more misinformation being spread.

Didn’t Rachel send a producer who could find no signs of any construction that would have impacted voting at the original site?

I don’t come here for clickbait.
