Discussion: John Oliver Doesn't Want Trump On His Show: He Has Nothing Else To Say

Discussion for article #242377

“It’s very frustrating to me, the amount of coverage of the election, years — often literally years — before it happens,” he said on CBS.

I envy our British cousins. Parliament is dissolved and 5 weeks later an election is held. The day after the election, the PM takes office. No campaigning allowed until the dissolution, either.

the secret nugget

Is Oliver saying Donald lost his celebriginity a long time ago but retains his suppleness?

“He’s (Trump’s) an open book And that book doesn’t have that many interesting words in it,” Oliver said."

I love Oliver’s understated take on things. He has the best show that goes more in depth than 60 minutes on his main story of the night, but makes it riotously funny too.

He could be saying that Drumpf is a nugget short of a Happy meal.

Of course, no American wit would be acceptable to a large media corporation…

That, yes, also don’t expect to bleed any knowledge from the nuggets that aren’t missing either.

Found a perhaps subtle dig at tRump in a crossword puzzle today. Answer “no trump” to clue “bid for a balanced hand.” Hope Oliver is setting a precedent.

Yes, I agree with you about the extensive coverage on the 2016 elections. But unfortunately, in order to get folks to the polls, you’ve got to keep this crazy shit in front of them at all times. We need to be reminded daily, just how bad it can get out here if we don’t push back!

I have no studies to cite but I’d bet money the trivial focusses of the reporting contribute to low voter turnout. It’s never “it matters that and for whom you vote and here’s why,” it’s almost entirely the horse race, the gaffe, the sound bite, the sniping. The schools, the media, and the citizens themselves are vital to doing democracy right and none of them are doing what they need to.

“Who do you admire MOST?” and you offer 2 options???

Jesus H CHRIST, is everyone at TPM illiterate???

It should be “more”!!! Not “most”!!!

And they get to yell at at each other in Parliament during question time in contrast to our oh-so-polite congress critters whose disgust and contempt is barely hidden. IMO a good heartfelt yell at an opponent could be cathartic.

Not just Trump. Same could be said of any number of Republican candidates. I mean, how interesting would an interview with Ted Cruz be? Or Ben Carson? Carly Fiorina? They have their set talking points and no facts will dare change their positions.

I think we here at TPM consider ourselves representative of average folks when it comes to tuning in to politics. We’re not. I know no one in my circle of friends or family of mostly left- leaners who pay as close attention to what goes on as we do (and the only person I know who’s as tuned in as I is my better half fortunately). It’s safe to say some people don’t tune in until a few weeks before the election and are in fact good and sick of the nonstop coverage for the better part of two years preceding an election and in fact are driven away.

I’ve posted this before but I met a young man recently who was surprised to learn HRC was running for president because he hadn’t watched the news lately. I was speechless and told him she was the frontrunner which was okay with him…

Well, a lot of people watched the “debates” already. But at least for the Republicans, judging by the enthusiastic audience response to any lies or cheap debate tricks that fit their preconceived notions, obviously they are uninformed and not interested in actual knowledge. Probably about anything.

I love this because as usual Oliver has amusingly expressed a key insight—Trump is boring. Dear God, is he boring. It would be unbearable to spend 45 minutes in the same room with him. He’s very much like Palin in being extremely intellectually lazy and vapid, and having nothing to say but saying it over and over again. All their mental resources go toward getting themselves ahead in life—they seem to have no other interests at all.

John, you know you will be slimmed, which is probably why you did what you did,and it will really prove your point about the Donald.IMO.

Propably the most cutting comment about Trump that Oliver could make. In other words, Donald, you’re simply not interesting and have nothing of substance to offer. Ouch.

Well, Orwell was right when he said “To see what is in front of one’s nose needs a constant struggle.” You have to make an effort, and most people don’t. So they get led by the nose, or let the more extreme segments choose for them. But it’s much harder for people when most of the media aren’t even trying to tell them what’s really going on.
