Discussion: Joe Biden Still Supports The Controversial Hyde Amendment

“Go, Joe, go — AWAY!”

I’m so sick of him already. And this is without even mentioning of how much I loathe our old, white man gerontocracy.

“he’d consider repealing the Hyde Amendment if current abortion access gets blocked by the conservative-leaning Supreme Court.”

This sounds weird. How could repealing the amendment compensate for the sabotage by SCOTUS?

“NBC notes that while Biden served in the Senate, he voted multiple times to strip the rape and incest exceptions.”

Not a good look.

Gonna cost him a bunch of votes.

Joe Biden should not be the nominee of the Democratic Party for President in 2020. It’s not complicated.

You’re right, obviously it would not, and the fact that the campaign gave such an incoherent response on such an important issue tells you how much they actually care/have thought about reproductive rights.

OFFS.

No matter how one feels about the guy, you’ve got to admit that this is a boneheaded position to take, for a Democrat trying to win a primary.

It’s also even worse if he’s contradicting himself on something he said a month ago. Not a good sign.

Joe’s not having a good day.

that thud you just heard was the bottom dropping out of Biden’s support among female Democratic primary voters.

Joe is a consistent Republican lite style Democrat. A lot of people seem to be shocked to learn that he hasn’t really evolved from the 1990s even though the rest of the country has. This position just adds to the rising pile of positions (including the novel idea that once Trump is gone Republicans will be easy to work with) demonstrating that Joe just isn’t the best candidate for 2020.

The ones who are focused on reproductive freedom, at least. Not sure how big a percentage of the Dem primary electorate that represents. But it’s at least another drop in the bucket, and Biden sure does look determined to drown his own campaign.

The very idea of having to hold my nose and vote for him distresses me to the very depths of my soul.

May he and his campaign implode as spectacularly as a Texas fertilizer plant explosion.

Wanna bet?

this is beyond bizarre. Was these some kind of “damned if you do, damned if you don’t” bills put together by GOP Senators to embarass Dems? I mean, even Biden can’t have been that stupid…

Let the suppression of the enthusiasm of the base BEGIN!
On your mark. Get Set!

This sounds like it might be one of Biden’s campaign staff getting his position wrong, if that earlier quote from him is accurate. It wouldn’t be the first time they messed up,

If he actually is holding this stated position, then he’s even more clueless than I thought about the current era.

Oy. Funny how less progressive he sounds every day. Is that on purpose to get those in the middle, that elusive independent vote, or is that some kind of tone deafness that comes with old age? Uncle Joe is becoming kind of an embarrassment at this point on women’s issues, and there’s no Obama to hide behind to make him shine anymore. Hell, he’s not even my uncle’s uncle anymore.

You would think that Joe was stored in a glass box during the Obama administration. Obama survived so nobody had to break the glass. Joe is just now emerging into the 21th century. How can any Democrat be so out of touch?

I think that most Democratic women focus on the right to control their own bodies – and that Biden’s support was based on the image of him being “safe”. I personally had no idea that he supported the Hyde amendment – and the cycle of dependency that the Hyde amendment creates/perpetuates among low income women. And I suspect that most of Biden’s supporters were equally unaware.

Uh, no. Not even close. As paul noted above, at issue is support among female Democratic primary voters among the base. Not the base as a whole. I have a feeling (maybe I’m wrong) that his campaign has pretty much written that bloc off because they don’t think they’re going to get much traction from that area anyway. Not a smart move in today’s political climate, as far as I’m concerned.

I really don’t want to nominate Biden. I don’t think he can win.
