What should have been a joyous occasion for these kids has become, at best, bittersweet. And since politicians have done next to nothing except pay lip service, these kids have had to take up the challenge of protecting their generation since my generation apparently won’t. We should feel ashamed that we won’t protect our children in meaningful ways as putting more guns in schools is just stupid.

My kid just graduated. The ceremony was held at the arena on a nearby university campus. All the parents etc. had to walk through metal detectors, no purses or bags, nothing bigger than a phone (they did allow some clear bags for diapers etc.).
My kid on the other hand reported later that all the seniors walking into the building via a separate entrance, wearing gowns, incidentally, had no metal detectors or any security. Go figure.
I can’t imagine how upsetting hearing the gunfire may have been to some participants in the Parkland ceremony, and how disrespectful not to close it for a few hours.
