Discussion: Jezebel Staffers: Gawker Won't Fix Our 'Rape Gif Problem'

Discussion for article #226230

So maybe they should go to Disqus, and not allow image links or HTTP in comments, like most other sites with Disqus.

Disqus blows. That being said, itā€™s better than what Gawker switched to (Kinja) and itā€™s infinitely better than what TPM crapped out.

Still wondering about the kind of pathetic coward that spends all their time setting up burner accounts to post offensive images.

Beat me to it. The system they have here totally sucks, and is only marginally better that that purely miserable POS commenting system they have over at The Daily Beast. I stopped going to that site pretty much completely because of that.

I like Disqus, the only thing I really wish they had was an ā€˜Ignoreā€™ button, and a way to lower the banhammer on those who clone other peopleā€™s accounts. The best commenting system Iā€™ve seen by far is at WaPo, which is why I do most of my commenting there. Yes, they still have trolls, but at least for the most part, the trolls there can actually spell.

As for Gawker, Iā€™ve been to their site twice, sneered at it in disgust, and then deleted it from my History file.

Beej, just with a penchant for porn instead of Faces of (librul) Death?

Any of the legions of idiots at 4Chan, SomethingAwful, or Reddit?

Well, I donā€™t do Gawker, but I do io9, which is part of their empire.

Remember the porn troll who used to visit TPM? That was with Disqus.

Yes, I know.

You know we still have trolls, right? And AFAIK thereā€™s nothing preventing them from posting porn?

Mary, I too am amazed that my best friendsā€™s sisterā€™s roommate makes $2600 a week just work working a few hours on her computer! Last month she made $12434432378!

www.iwanttrojansandrootkits.ru!

Just sayingā€™.

Whatever else you say about the new system, those spammer idiots and the periodic invasions by Drudgeites and Dr. Pawā€™s Army of Extwaowdinawy Magnitude are gone. Iā€™m not crazy about the slidy thing at the side rather than comments at the bottom, because it seems kind of like weā€™re being shoved into the attic with the crazy aunt the way a lot of news sites have done, but the addition of the ā€œbest ofā€ things at the bottom make me feel less like that.

Iā€™ve been commenting here for, god, seven or eight years now. Iā€™ve been through a lot of commenting system changes and flat out abandoned the site during the unfortunate FB experiment. This one one is far from the worst.

Update: and as if to confirm it, I made the mistake of following a link to a click bait story on the Hill about Ron Paul rambling about the federal gubbamint hidinā€™ the awful truth about the Malaysian Air airliner that was shot down in Ukraine, because dagblame it with all their satellites and fancy spy stuff you just know they have to know more than theyā€™re tellinā€™ and yet theyā€™re not tellingā€™ proving the existence of a conspiracy to hide the truth! And, wouldnā€™tcha just know it, the comments were completely overrun by a horde of Paultards.

ā€œā€˜abuseā€™ā€ was in scare quotes because Thompson is reserving judgement on whether they might have been relevant and substantive rape .gifs?

I feel for the Jez staffers, but this is Kinjaā€™s fault, and by extension Nick Dentonā€™s fault. Each iteration of Kinja has been worse than last, and each major addition (burner accounts, removal of editorial control from trusted users) has made the product worse.

You would be amazed. I once spoke out about something as benign as a dog rescue scam and was followed around the internet for nearly 2 years being attacked and libeled by dozens of anonymous posters. Iā€™m now in litigation against two of them.

I see the benefit to anonymous internet commenting, but thereā€™s also a really dark side.

This. This shit right here is what bothers me. We donā€™t have a right to not be offended. How about some people just scroll past offensive material and not make a huge, whiney deal about it. I know, I know, since itā€™s jezebel then someone needs to write a feminist dissertation about an offensive post, or comment, and then the rest of the world needs to weigh in and voice their opinion.

My god do I hate that damn site and their commenters.

Just scroll past the violent sexist porn on a feminist oriented site? No, its got to be made to stop. Its an assault and an intentional assault at that. Sick fascist scum. Gawker has an absolute duty to take it seriously and to end it immediately or to stop burner accounts completely. Just the way it has to be.

So did the women at Jezebel take time off from ogling male soccer player thighs to complain about porn? Jezebel is indicative of the general hypocrisy now endemic in the feminist movement. I support equality, I donā€™t support feminism.

Images in comments is a nice-to-have. They should just shut that down for awhile, while they figure out what to do to moderate the morons.

As for TPMā€™s comment sectionā€¦ yeah this is not my favorite. Actively keeps me from commenting much on the site. Too many extra clicks, pretty bad for following discussions.

Jezebel isnā€™t a site for porn and rape gifs. If you like them so much, stick to 4chan, where your access is unfettered. The staff and the readers donā€™t want to see it, and we shouldnā€™t have to. Why are you making such a ā€œbig, whiney dealā€ about a website you hate so much anyway? It shouldnā€™t matter to you since youā€™re not a reader, unless of course youā€™re the creep whoā€™s posting the damn things in the first place.

Iā€™m disappointed to see TPM taking the stance that hardcore porn and rape GIFs are not considered legitimate abuse when theyā€™re posted in the fashion that they have been. Your use of quotes around ā€œabuseā€ makes it appear to be in question as to whether this actually rises to the level of abuse for the staff. I think itā€™s very clear from their post and their discussions with management that they do feel these GIFs are abusive, and thatā€™s the only opinion that matters here.
