There may be good reason to do this.
As much as we all like to see Trump conspirators suffer, I would prefer that nothing happen to Manafort in custody. If this keeps him safe but still behind bars so he can stand for charges I’m fine with it. He’s not a sympathetic figure, no need for him to get beat up and show up to court visibly injured and get some undeserved sympathy.
Surely it looks fishy, and could be. Surely this administration has not earned the benefit of the doubt (quite the opposite). Surely I have no problem them getting bad press about it even if it was the appropriate thing to do.
This will not be the last time someone within Trump’s orbit intervenes to ease the plight of Paul Manafort.
“We’re watching out for you. Remember that. Possible pardon to come…”
That put the ‘b’ right back in “Subtle”.
Corrupt…an adjective and a verb.
Yeah, because living with the consequences of their actions is for the little people, folks with powerful friends can’t be put in uncomfortable situations, no matter what their offense.
So something is very rotten with the system and all within it should be treated similarly, or this is privilege.
Yes, I am absolutely sure if some black guy who got busted for selling weed and was going to be transferred to Riker’s Island until his court date the DOJ would have gone out of its way to have him transferred to a different facility because they would be concerned for his welfare, considering the well-known empathy of William Barr and Donald Trump. I mean, they do it all the time.
Manafort shouldn’t be treated any differently than any other felon. If it’s appropriate to transfer Manafort to another, supposedly safer environment, then send all prisoners to a safer prison. Why should any other person suffer somewhere because a POS like Manafort gets special treatment due to a federal intervention, even against the recommendation of the prosecutors?
Somehow, I don‘t expect to see Manafort on the chain gang breaking rocks. I do have visions of him living a luxurious life like the Mexican cartel leaders in Mexican prisons, where one can pay for better accommodations.
I do think letting him wear ostrich skin prison garb would definitely be going too far.
No obstruction, no obstruction!!! No, wait!!! More obstruction!!!
Waiting for Democrats to protest. Sad.
Just another perk Paul won’t want to jeopardize in his upcoming trial. Horns of a dilemma.
I have a feeling this may blow up in their faces. If the DOJ had negotiated with the prosecutors and the prosecutors then made the recommendation to send Manafort somewhere else, then it wouldn’t look so corrupt. But this is just blatant Trumpism.
Does seem like that possibility. No good explanation for this special treatment, and that it’s from the top of the DOJ…
Why Trump doesn’t just pardon him is beyond me. He’s kept his mouth shut, and this is how he gets repaid, with over a year in prison so far.
And only saved from being sent to a worse place.
High profile, is high profile.
Ex-Cops convicted of crimes don’t go to general population for a reason.
Is Manafort deserving of special treatment?.. of course not. I’m just saying it’s possible it actually serves justice and the longer it looks like a Pauley is not ever getting out of prison and Federal pardons won’t help, the more likely he finally rolls over.
Surely the administration is not looking for that outcome, but if their extra care helps us get there, I’ll take it.
Of course it could be that they are making it easier for Pootie to make that problem go away.
I agree with the “right thing for the wrong reason “ people.
The thing I worry about would be keeping him in a federal facility, pardon, gets spirited out of the country with the officials mumbling something later about lost paperwork on the state detainer.
Pennsylvania is much closer to DC than Manhattan–hope he goes to Manhattan if he gets transferred out of Rikers. I don’t want Barr’s minions to have unfettered, unaccountable (at least by the press) access to him.
For clarity, I’m in the “might be the right thing for the wrong reason” camp.
With these chuckleheads, it’s just as likely “the wrong thing for the wrong reasons that despite their worst efforts comes out as serving justice”
…or making it easier for Putins thugs to have “Tea time w/ Pauley”
This is not exactly your typical action of a high ranking official at the DOJ, now is it?
This is instead right out of the Godfather.
Jesus.
