Discussion: Jeff Flake Drafting Bill To Kneecap Trump On Trade Policy

Wondering if someone can answer a few questions: Does the President have sole authority to impose tariffs only when deemed necessary in the case of “national security?” Where does the authority of the President begin and end?

Flake:

I seriously question whether you’ll have enough Republican senators who want to cross the President in this ANY way

I have corrected the text for Jeff… he misspoke

Predictions? How is this going to play with McConnell and the other GOP senators?

And while we’re at it, is Ryan going to suddenly find that spine he’s been hiding?

(And just saw Ryan’s jellyfish quote at the end of the article… )

“Congress cannot be complicit as the administration courts economic disaster."

“Complicit in an ongoing Russian military attack to install a Kremlin puppet and Putin lackey in the Oval Office”, he continued, “but never complicit in risking quarterly dividends for our Billionaire Class!”

Mr. Flake, I’ll take back, like… ten percent of the bad things I’ve said about you over the last year if you get this stinker to a vote. Twenty percent if it makes it out of the Senate with a veto-proof majority, whereupon Paul Ryan will be “concerned” about the message it would send if, just this once, he protected America from the Boehner Rule, and not bring it to the floor.

Ryan is so worked up he may draft a strong worded memo. Of course, it will have to go out under someone else’s signature because, ya know, spineless simp.

Ryan and the other Koch funded GOPers in Congress must be conflicted by this Op-Ed scrolled by Charles Koch.

Greg Sargent touches on the subject here:

and references a Reuters article Trump’s extraordinary tariffs on the legal issue.

Though it would mean that ‘Cecil’ has to poll his caucus, that idea isn’t happening

“I disagree with this action and fear its unintended consequences,” Ryan said.

So, so tough and scawy, that Paulie.

The visual is extremely satisfying. Yes, this is a group of like objects.

His authority on tariffs is strictly statutory.
Congress has the Constitutional authority, but ceded it to the Executive some time ago.

Thanks for the link. Relying on Donald Trump for any analytical or intellectual rigor in determining what is or is not “national security,” or any other policy issue for that matter, is foolish. Trump is an irrational, emotional decision maker and is a danger to the well being and future of this country. Period.
