Discussion: Jeff Flake: Don't Shut Down Gov't Over Immigration, Pass Reform Instead

Discussion for article #230359

What a concept suggesting the Republicans actually do their jobs.

In no way do i feel comfortable with myself for admitting this, but reading Flake’s remarks, so far, he is a Republican that i can actually respect. Congress could actually function if there were a few more Republicans willing to work for the American people, instead of for Ted Cruz.

This is an aberrant comment from Flake, who is usually in full accord with the nutbar wing of the GOP.

Maybe he’s trying to reposition now that they will be the majority. It’s easy/fun to be a nutbar when you don’t have to take responsibility for anything in the minority? Would be nice to see him and other Senate R’s apply some pressure on the house.

More importantly, why isn’t every Dem in existence parroting this?

Yeah, I get a bit woozy when I contemplate the possibility that Flake is now in the saner half of his party.

Yep, the Overton window has overtaken the Voyager, it’s well out past the solar system and it’s just keeping on going.

Flake must be looking to get drummed out of the GOTP.

Don’t worry, he’ll back track as soon as tomorrow.

Noted Flake:

“I hope we respond with legislation.I hope we pass legislation. And if any of you need your dogs boarded during the upcoming holiday season, I know just the place.”

Holy shit. A Republican who said something sane and responsible.

Sorry, not a chance. They’ll use comments like this to say that they really, really wanted legislation, and now the prez is acting like a tyrant. The media will plaster comments like this all over the airwaves as they report the president’s unilateral actions. Count on it.

So you respect Flake for saying “let’s screw the middle class with mass immigration so my donors can get richer?”

And you also respect the idea that the proper response to a Presidential abuse of power is to ratify it with legislation?

You could very well be correct. Put out a shallow gesture of compromise. Let the President say no. Assign the blame. MIssion acomplished.

Yesterday, i was somehow overcome by an epiphany of hope. Today, however, is another day.

So flooding the country with millions more immigrants, and expanding the number of jobs open to people who are here illegally (so that more American workers will be facing competition) is what you call sane?

Glad you feel the need and the ability to put words i never said into my mouth.

Those “millions” are already here, and most of them are contributing to the American economy. If you can reference any source where any Dem or the President has called for the immigration of millions MORE to be allowed to enter illegally, please show that source to me. So far, it seems that you’re making things up to feel good about yourself. Is it working? Have you boosted your self-image any beyond adolescence? Good for you if you have, but there’s still much maturity to be gained in what you say.

That’s Republican Objective Number 1! Jobs! Jobs! Millions of low paying jobs!

I disagree. I can recall Flake saying honest, reality-based things that his party’s leadership doesn’t like to hear on a few other occasions.

When push comes to shove, he backs down and votes the way they tell him, but he does seem to have some independent, reasonable, and responsible thoughts.

He’s also someone who means it when he talks about the deficit, instead of the usual “Democratic deficits are horrible, Reagan proved that deficits don’t matter” stance.

Yeah, and you also have to hear people with accents in the supermarket, amirite?
