Discussion: Jeb Bush Distances Himself A Bit More From Adviser James Baker

Like austerity, neocon thought cannot fail, it can only be failed.

Well, true to a point. But Fukuyama sort of walked away from his earlier positions, claiming that neoconservatism changed and morphed under Bush’s application of it. In a 2006 essay in The New York Times Magazine strongly critical of the invasion, he identified neoconservatism with Leninism. He wrote that neoconservatives:

In the formulation of the scholar Ken Jowitt, the neoconservative position articulated by people like Kristol and Kagan was, by contrast, Leninist; they believed that history can be pushed along with the right application of power and will. Leninism was a tragedy in its Bolshevik version, and it has returned as farce when practiced by the United States. Neoconservatism, as both a political symbol and a body of thought, has evolved into something I can no longer support.

Sounds pretty darned reasonable!

What do you dislike about James Baker’s foreign policy views and positions?

Granted, is his spearheading the Bush vote-recount travesty in 2000 which ended with seating someone who did not win the election, in the Oval Office was a grave error, of truly historic propositions, but on foreign policy, Baker is a legitimate realist (I would rather state it as a pragmatist) and not a ā€œrealistā€ in the Kissinger mold.

YMMV.

I stole it, so you can too

jebby and jimmy-a meeting of the no-minds.

Well…that’s true. And their website is gone and the Statement Of Principles won’t fit on a bumpersticker. Never mind.

Yeah, there are some guys of whom Nietzsche might well have made much the same criticisms had he lived to see them turn a vulgarized debasement of his philosophy into an ideology. And no, I’m not blaming Nietzsche, but I can’t say I found the real philosophy much more appealing than the evil ideology. More interesting, but not more appealing.

Great comment. One small point of disagreement. You say that the creepiest neocon ever is the indicted and pardoned Elliot Abrams, He’s very creepy, but I think John Bolton edges him out due to his recent recommendation that we nuke Iran.

It’s close but I’ve got to go with Elliot A-hole. It all goes back to St Ronnie etc. trace evil to its source

Too true. Just becuase Ayn Rand took the worst aspects of Nietzsche’s Übermensch archetype, and turned it into a manifesto for libertarian sociopathy, doesn’t mean I buy into the Übermensch or the philosophy from which he sprang.

"Bush had previously said it was a mistake
for Baker, an adviser and former secretary of state, to speak at the
left-leaning Israel policy group J Street. In that appearance, Baker
criticized Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu over seeming to
change his position on a two-state solution. "

Truth will set you free I see Mr Baker,if not free some space has been created.ā€œJeb Bush Distances Himself A Bit More From Adviser James Bakerā€

NCSteve, you are absolutely right about the Project for A New American Century, but have you noticed that Marco Rubio’s slogan is ā€œA New American Centuryā€ God help us if we get a resurgence of the PNAC neocon whack jobs.

Few believe that it is possible any more perhaps.

My thoughts exactly, Who’d a thought - to the right of James Baker

In deference to Baker’s age, JEB ordered a handrail attached to the plank…

Agree, he and Bush I intervened after the 2006 midterms. Rumsfield was shown the door.
Baker and Bush I also decided against escalating the Iraq War I by refusing to advance on Baghdad and force regime change.

ā€œā€¦the mindset they were dealing with 25 years ago.ā€

Jeb Bush, doomed to repeat the failures.

Baker may not be anti-Israel – meaning liberals are also not anti-Israel (thanks, Jeb!) – but Netanyahu favors Israel’s interests over America’s interests.

Great comment.
Just add the neil bush/china connection along with mcturtles wife family hooked up to coal tankers moving back and forth and you have the connections that make the most moolah. lol
So jebbus has numerous non working high paying jobs to fall back on if the prez thingy doesn’t work out.

Oh, them too. But I was actually thinking about those other mid twentieth century guys who turned the whole ubermensch-will to power kind of nihilisic thing into an ideology. You know . . . those guys you can’t actually mention on the Internet?
