Discussion: Is Ray Rice Only In Trouble Because He Got Caught?

Discussion for article #227536

Absolutely!
The NFL had these tapes (and probably others) for over 4 months and thought they could keep one of their cash-cows if it could be covered up.
TMZ Sports blew their cover and now they must pay.

I guess I don’t find it very shocking or even outrageous that the NFL and other sports organizations put profit before moral considerations. What else would we expect from them? These are money making machines; when not directly opposed to morality they are by their nature indifferent to it. The only thing outrageous is that the right wing continues to trumpet the myth that the system of unfettered capitalism is somehow at the basis of morality.

Does it hurt to ask such stupid questions?

Back during Watergate, the people involved tried to say that others were doing the same thing, and they were. The only problem was that they got caught.

Same with Ray Rice.

Nah, it’s probably like being high.
This is, bar none, the dumbest, worst-written article I’ve ever seen on TPM.

Long answer, yes.

I don’t think it is the worst written, but it is arguably one of the dumbest. I’m still trying to figure out the basic question. Would Ray Rice have gotten into trouble if he weren’t caught? Um, no. But isn’t that true of anyone who commits any crime whatsoever?

Ray Rice is in big trouble only because he was caught on tape. No tape, a 2 game suspension and counselling in the diversion program.

Of course no one gets in trouble for doing something unless he gets caught. That’s why we have police. If every bank robber were to voluntarily visit the local prosecuting attorney and announce his misdeed, we wouldn’t need police. But, that isn’t how life works. Men cheat on their wives (and vice versa), but only “get in trouble” if the wife catches him at it. People shop lift every day, but only those caught get in trouble. I’m amazed that TPM was unaware of these basics.

Yes, that’s completely right. Unless what this article was actually getting at was the possibility of hidden karmic consequences to Ray Rice’s actions. If so, it was a well-disguised point.

The thing is, the tape exonerates Rice. He reacted in self-defense. Still wrong, immoral, unethical, his actions were, but the tape shows a guy, a couple, who need counselling. It was a domestic dispute. If we must call it an assault, it was an assault by the woman.

Joshua DuBois said it right, Rice is in big trouble because we saw the tape, and we are idiots, for the tape is evidence that legally exonertes him. IMO, the tape shows the 2 game suspension was justified, whereas before the tape I was hopping mad at Goodell for only a 2 game suspension for a “wife-beater”. Goodell is the one who should be fired.

I’m not so sure about that; there have been some truly stupid things on Cafe before it was revived, though I can’t remember them exactly.

I gotta admit, this is a pretty bad article.
Regarding the Jennifer Lawrence thing, the author is equating risque photo taking with domestic violence and/or racism. The problem with the leaked photos isn’t that they exist, it is that they were stolen and then shared with the world.
Rice was already caught before the video became public. Since that point the problem is the public’s reaction to it.

Thats the thing, based on the tape, a 2 game suspension is more justified than a lifetime ban.
Agreed the league must pay, Goodell should be fired.

What piece of advice would you give a pre-born infant?

If everything evolved from amoebas, how does the world still have amoebas?

Why is there something rather than nothing?

Why all of this stuff and not some other stuff?
