All that talk about someone being a secret Kenyan Muslim anti-colonial socialist - THOSE were just jokes.
That doesnât explain the blind love for Reagan then. A conservative he wasnât. He is all theyâve got is the real deal and itâs not real.
Without Reagan, what do they have to hang their teabags on?
I am certainly no lover of Reagan, but I can answer your question pretty easilyâŚ
Take a look at the electoral map for 1980, and especially 1984.
Everybody wants to win elections, after all its the means to the ends of putting the policies you favor in place. But for republicans, winning became the ends. Its all about the gloating and trash talking for them.
And Reagan gave them big wins across the nation. Everything people are posting here about his actual legacy is meaningless in their eyes, becauseâŚhey, look at how red he made the map!
Actually, Reagan was a conservative republican, at least by how it was defined in the 70s. Or at least he was viewed as the leader of the conservative wing of the republican party, which had gotten its collective ass handed to in every primary since Goldwater.
He was also the last person from the republican partyâs conservative wing to win the primary, let alone the national election. H.W. certainly didnât represent that wing. Nor did Dole. W. could be painted that way, but in reality he was just the candidate that was least offensive to all three of the main factionsâŚneocons, social cons and fiscal cons. And needless to say, McCain and Romney most definitely did not represent the conservative wing.
Its pretty difficult to find a republican that will admit to voting for Bush. Even my recently divorced ex wife at the time, who was gleeful about telling me how she was voting for Bush (Sadly, yes, she could be that petty at times), now claims complete ignorance of who she voted for.
Itâs pretty telling that Bush, their last president, and two timer, was persona non grata at BOTH conventions since. Meanwhile, Bill Clinton gave perhaps the best speech of the convention for the Democrats.
Nancy Reagan 2016, I m sure all conservatives including the corporate kleptocrats could rally around her. She was married to god. She is the only republican whose accomplishments match up to Hillary Clintonâs.
Nancy could select either Michele Bachman, Rick Santorum or better yet Donald Trump as a running mate.
That was one of many fabrications that Reagan tossed out there against CarterâŚand it was untrue. The rally actually took place about 50 miles away from that town, and the KKK had already moved their HQ to Louisiana. Nor was it where Carter kicked off his campaign. That would be Plains GA, his hometown.
But here is a fun question for youâŚwho did the KKK actually endorse in the 1980 election? HintâŚthe guy who started his campaign in Philadelphia Mississippi.
President Reagan provided millions of dollars and weapons to what became Al Qaeda.
In the words of the late Lawrence Welk to the Iowa democratsâŚTank you, tank you ,tank you( for not being afraid to tell the truth) but get ready for the fiction lovers of saint RonnieâŚagain in the words of Welk( ok boys pee on your toes)
Me too!
I AM OUTRAGED that someone would call REAGAN âone of the greatest presidents in American history.â
Whether or not Reagan truly was a white supremacist is irrelevant from a retail politics standpoint: the allegation is simply stupid, stupid politics if posted on social media, and anybody who is unable to realize that fact shouldnât come within a country mile of any Democratic campaign.
THX1138âs factual points about Reagan are vastly more likely to change somebodyâs mind than is calling him a white supremacist ever is; the former challenges right-wing talking points with cold, unemotional facts, while the latter simply pisses them off and gives them an excuse to dismiss anything else you say.
The truth will set you free. Even worse that a bigot, he was a traitor who dealt with the Iranians and sent defenseless Marines to be slaughtered in Lebanon. May he burn like a phosphorus star in hell forever.
Reagan was a white supremacist? I never heard anything about that. I knew John Wayne was an admitted white supremacist but not Reagan.
OK, by their standard then, but not by his actions, just like little George.
They only need one Golden God to lionize and between Reagan and lilâ Bush, itâs not even close. Bush is the loser so bye-bye to him forever.
When I said that he wasnât a conservative, I meant the more generally accepted version, not phony Republican conservative. And in Reaganâs case, he was probably acting anyways.
He was a drug store, truck driving man.
âDeficits donât matter. Reagan proved thatâ Dick Cheney. Unless a Democrat is in the White House, of course.
âReagan opposed the Civil Rights Act of 1964, opposed the Voting Rights Act of 1965 (calling it âhumiliating to the Southâ), and ran for governor of California in 1966 promising to wipe the Fair Housing Act off the books. âIf an individual wants to discriminate against Negroes or others in selling or renting his house,â he said, âhe has a right to do so.â After the Republican convention in 1980, Reagan traveled to the county fair in Neshoba, Mississippi, where, in 1964, three Freedom Riders had been slain by the Ku Klux Klan. Before an all-white crowd of tens of thousands, Reagan declared: âI believe in statesâ rights.ââ
Quote from Sidney Blumenthal in the Guardian from 2003
Shoe fits.
I never understood why Barack Obama so admired ReaganâŚ
âIf an individual wants to discriminate against Negroes or others in selling or renting his house, it is his right to do so.â
â Ronald Reagan, 1966
