Hey! That’s totally unfair because it’s incomplete! The whole story is that one president launched his campaign by traveling to Philadelphia, Mississippi to deliver a speech in favor of ‘states rights’ wink wink nudge nudge.
He was not far off with that remark. Reagan and his party did push Kevin Phillips and Nixon’s southern strategy to demonize African Americans. Anyone can read and watch Lee Atwater’s speech on can see on you tube. Reagan also launched his candidacy in the
country where three civil rights workers were murdered by the KKK , talking about “state’s rights” I would call him pretty racist.
TP POV: “You say ‘white supremacist’ like it’s a bad thing!”
Right you are, and for those who haven’t a clue as to just what that time and place meant might want to do a little Googling
Hey if the shoe fits! He did announce his candidacy in Philadelphia right? So what’re they complaining about?
Some GOP shill called the post “offensive and extremely disrespectful to the Reagan family.” I’m sure he’s been equally appalled at the epithets tossed on the daily at the Obama family over the last 6 years, right?
“Myth Reagan” is the fiction that dominates the Righties’ revisionist history of modern American history. They cling to an illusion they see as truth, a figure that never really existed. That fact alone is indicative of and speaks volumes about how easily they substitute lies for truth, fictions for reality and create a mythological figure to embody all their fetid and fading ideas…a mythological figure, because the “Reagan” they worship never really existed.
Example 1: Reagan was a tax cutter and didn’t raise taxes on the Am public: Myth! The Tax Equity and Fiscal Responsibility Act of 1982 was, at the time, the largest peacetime tax increase in U.S. history.Ultimately, Reagan signed measures that increased federal taxes every year of his two-term presidency except the first and the last. These included a higher gasoline levy, a 1986 tax reform deal that included the largest corporate tax increase in American history, and a substantial raise in payroll taxes in 1983 as part of a deal to keep Social Security solvent. While wealthy Americans benefitted from Reagan’s tax policies, blue-collar Americans paid a higher percentage of their income in taxes when Reagan left office than when he came in.
Example 2: Reagan shrank Big Gummint’: Myth! Federal spending grew by an average of 2.5 percent a year, adjusted for inflation, while Reagan was president. The national debt exploded, increasing from about $700 billion to nearly $3 trillion. The number of federal employees grew from 2.8 million to 3 million under Reagan, in large part because of his buildup at the Pentagon. (It took the Democratic administration of President Clinton to trim the employee rolls back to 2.7 million.) Reagan also abandoned a campaign pledge to get rid of two Cabinet agencies - Energy and Education - and added a new one, Veterans Affairs.
Example 3: Reagan was a cultural warrior: Myth! Reagan’s contributions to the culture wars of the 1980s were largely rhetorical and symbolic and empty. Reagan signed legislation that legalized abortion in California as governor in the late 1960s and he NEVER sought a constitutional ban on abortion.
…And the list could go on and on and on…
By the end of his second term, one of his earliest supporters, Michael Ferris said Reagan provided only smoke and mirrors to the conservatives who wanted so much more but had to settle for “…a bunch of political trinkets.”
So today, the Cons cling to Myth Reagan as a Conservative Messiah, but he was, in reality, just a good huckster who knew well how to play, for the most part, that Right Wingnuttery group like the proverbial fiddle. And today, the Baggerland Nutjobs have little connection to reality anyway…so the fiction of St. Ronnie the Braveheart defeating the Liberal Dragon is all their cesspool-like minds need it appears.
I wish it would make them uncomfortable but most of them would just claim that Coates is the real racist. They are masters of cognitive dissonance, one and all.
the problem is the Demowimps are afraid to talk about the real RayGun legacy so let me help
OBAMA KILLED TERRORISTS, REAGAN GAVE THEM WEAPONS
Reagan had become frustrated at his inability to secure the release of the seven American hostages being held by Iranian terrorists in Lebanon. As president, Reagan felt that "he had the duty to bring those Americans home."so he gave 1,500 missiles had been shipped to Iran. Three hostages had been released, only to be replaced with three more, in what Secretary of State George Shultz called "a hostage bazaar.
The April 18, 1983 United States embassy bombing was a suicide bombing in Beirut, Lebanon, that killed 63 people, mostly embassy and CIA staff members, several soldiers and one Marine. 17 of the dead were Americans. It was the deadliest attack on a U.S. diplomatic mission up to that time, and is thought of as marking the beginning of anti-U.S. attacks by Islamist groups.
The attack came in the wake of the intervention of a Multinational Force, made up of Western countries, including the U.S., in the Lebanese Civil War, to try to restore order and central government authority. EAGAN CUT AND RUN, OBAMA DIDN’T COWER
Remember when the GOP loved to say “cut and run” as an excuse to keep our troops in Iraq forever? Even after they said “Mission Accomplished”? But who invented cut and run?
The Gipper. REAGAN:
Reagan retreated from Lebanon immediately after the 1983 terror attack by Hezbollah that resulted in the murder of 243 Marines. According to the 9/11 Commission Report (p. 96), Reagan’s cut and run INSPIRED Bin Laden, who viewed the United States as a “paper tiger” because of its rapid withdrawal after the attack.
Who remembers that Mr. Reagan appeared in Philadelphia, Mississippi (not PA) to kick off his Presidential campaign in 1980?
Not the Reagan tushy-kissers!
If you act like a racist – and Reagan did – then you’re a racist.
Good for the Iowa Democrats for telling the truth.
I’m sure somebody didn’t like the whole idolatry thing. Now…who was that…on the tip of my tongue. Well, it couldn’t have been that important if you can forget it so easily.
It isn’t hard at all to come up with a list of St. Ronnie’s moves that would make the current crop of WooWoo Bagger nutjobs and Con Wingnuts cringe. Yet, they still cling to their ‘Myth Reagan.’
Hmmm…Here’s a good start:
- Reagan was a serial tax raiser who raised taxes 7 out of his 8 years in office.
- Reagan nearly tripled the federal budget deficit.
- Unemployment soared and so did income inequality after Reagan’s 1981 disastrous tax cuts.
- Reagan grew the size of the federal government tremendously.
- Reagan did almost zero and gave only lip service to fight a woman’s right to choose.
- Reagan once called himself a “bellicose peacenik.” He wrote in his memoirs that his "…dream…became a world free of nuclear weapons.”
- Reagan gave amnesty to 3 million undocumented immigrants.
- Reagan illegally funneled weapons to Iran.
- Reagan vetoed a comprehensive anti-Apartheid act and argued that sanctions against South Africa’s horrid policies would do nothing.
- Reagan helped create the Taliban and Osama Bin Laden.
And those are only the first ten things that come to mind that would curdle the blood of these depraved RepubliKKKlans and Baggerloons today IF they could face and handle the truth about their fictional hero, their Lord and Savior Ronnie Reagan.
Will a Ronnie Raygun lover please explain what Reagan actually did to become such a saint in Republican circles!
Winning the Cold War doesn’t count! Don’t even bring it up!
The Cold War started roughly in 1946 long before Reagan was President and ended in 1991 after he had completely drifted off into La La Land!
So besides running up the deficit x’s 3, raising taxes, ignoring the AIDs epidemic, cutting and running in Beruit after the Marine Barracks bombing, having the most corrupt administration until Bush II came along etc, what did Reagan do?
Read here all about his administrations many scandals:
So I ask again, what did Reagan do while president, to give all you repubs a woodie every time you hear his name or see his picture?
+1
Reagan was a nasty racist bigot. He launched his election campaign at the country fair where the KKK kidnapped the three civil rights workers they murdered. That wasn’t an accident, it was a dog whistle.
Playing the race card makes you a racist regardless of whether you believe in their crap or not. But Reagan was a believer, he left the Democrats because of the civil rights act.
And it goes without saying that the GOP is just as racist today only they know they can’t hate openly on blacks so they find ways to hate gays or Latinos instead.
Typical Democratic cowardice…the Rethugs are calling Obama everything under the sun, but we run and apolotize for this? Pussies.
Yeah yeah we get all that but they’re still going to apologize.
(8a) The weapons funneled to Iran were stolen from US taxpayers and the proceeds used to illegally fund the “Contras” in Nicaragua and Honduras, leading to our current child immigrant difficulties.
Gawwd’ I don’t doubt it at all.
When they want to talk about “being disrespectful to a family” lets talk about armed gun nuts running around Dealy plaza in Dallas where a President was actually assassinated…
I just want to puke on these right wing pukes.
“We deeply apologize for offending you with the truth.”
