The general point is well-made. A correction: the issue did not deal with 501©(3) organizations which are generally legitimate charities (except when in the hands of Donald Trump) but 501©(4) organizations which are basically a workaround to get tax-exempt status to organizations promoting political ideology. I recall that Karl Rove was a big promoter of this perversion of the IRS Code . Lawrence O’Donnell did good reporting on the subject back in the day. In my view, the real scandal is that ANY organization whose business is partisan advocacy is afforded tax exempt status. This is the real magic act: getting outlets like TPM to assume in their reporting that 501©(4)s are legitimate and focus all the attention on the nonsense of the IRS Commissioner’s risk of impeachment.
