Discussion: Hyde-Smith’s Comments Spark More Calls For Refunds, Boycott Of Giants

Aside from the racism aspect a boycott would be in order merely because it’s, you know, baseball. Watching paint dry should draw higher ratings in my opinion.

Boycott the Giants? All Dodger fans would gladly help out!

I’ve heard that MLB has been thinking of expanding into the US south, with Mississippi being mentioned as a possible location for a new team. That would explain the donations by the Giants and MLB to Hyde-Smith.

As the season is over for a few months, I’m wondering about the effectiveness of “boycott.” I hope the Giants organization figures out a way to boot this “part-owner” out.

Sort of OT:
As is the case with many, many San Francisco venues these days, “going to the game” has become an opportunity for the New People to take smug selfies. I love that park and I love Giants baseball, but I’ve been priced out. (full disclosure - I also moved to Indiana, so… ) The New People seem to be largely too self-absorbed to care much about sacrificing a pleasure in order to support the larger community. /rant

Have you ever heard George Carlin’s comparison of baseball vs football?

WTF? This woman has ALWAYS been a raging racist. When Walmart and Google and the other gave her money that was well established. She forgets she’s supposed to hide it, blurts it out and these guys suddenly find Jesus? Bullshit. She got caught and they got caught. They all got caught trying to put an unreconstructed Seg era racist in the Senate representing a state with a Black population of 38%. This shouldn’t be allowed to fly.

And giving the money back after you get elected is a bit like giving back a stolen car after you robbed a bank with it.

Trump is undeniably a racist. The list of people, organizations, companies and other entities that give him money dwarfs those giving to Hyde-Smith by a factor of 100. No doubt dozens of sport franchise owners and executives contributed to Trump’s campaign. Let’s out all of them, and let the boycott chips fall where they may.

Boycott baseball, who cares? Can we boycott Google? Is it even possible?

Yes she may have been a raging racist in the past but now she got a chance to play in the major leagues. What she said and done in the past was apparently normal in Mississippi, not right but normal. She was advanced to a national stage and is learning that she and her “normal” is not normal.

Which leads me to my rant about these individuals and corporations that give money to individual candidates they don’t know just because they are Republicans. I call bullshit on this type of money as speech.

Oh, I think there is a very strong case to be made racism is normal in the United States. The list of white people shot dead for a malfunctioning taillight or failing to signal a lane change is exceedingly short.

I’m not denying that racism doesn’t exist elsewhere in the US, but there are only a few places that let their racist flag fly so freely as in Mississippi.

I guess that sorta makes sense… I’m wondering if the people who donate to these putrid candidates get the same kind of emails that I get after supporting a candidate via DNCC but from the GOP - “So-and-so GOPer needs your help! Click here to donate…”

Maybe. But every day in every state you can read stories of black people doing the most mundane thing and getting hassled, arrested or killed for it. Pick the state. Tennessee. Maryland. Alabama. Texas.

I can cite stories similar to the above links. For every state in the union.

Ahh, that does make sense. I’ve been trying to make more immediate strategic sense of this than just the usual rich people ugliness. On that level though, MLB donations to Republicans are generally connectable to the desire to keep paying minor league players starvation wages.

I can betcha that Google and ilks must have known that Hyde-Smith has been a Confederate racist whore. They’ve been agitated since after her gaffs that led to the exposure of who could’ve donated to this bigot.

My point is that Hyde-Smith and her racist comments aren’t racist to her because she is surrounded by racists. And I don’t mean just white supremacists, but everyday white people that are still raised in an racist environment. I’m not excusing her for her views I’m marveling at her lack of the world outside of her town, county, and state. And this is the person that her Governor appointed to go to DC. So there’s that. And then once let out of DC apparently has not had her eyes opened to how other people-black, brown, and even whites live.

I enjoy Giants games, but in the end it is just entertainment, and if there is no enjoyment from watching a performance produced by a racist, I get it. I am personally more disturbed by the MLB PAC throwing dollars at this dim-bulb, reactionary racist in Mississippi. Is it now just the way of the world that a business has to throw money at any politician to be heard or treated fairly? Really MLB – what a slap to the racial diversity that makes you all the $.

I don’t know, where in the hell would they put a team in Mississippi?
Jackson is the largest city with 165,000.
I can think of about a dozen southern cities that would make more sense.

I live in the Bay Area and never heard of Charles Johnson as co-owner of the Giants. What a horror!
