Discussion: How A Republican Senate Could Upend Obama's Legacy

Discussion for article #229398

“[Young] constitutionalists” like Paul, Lee, and Cruz calling the shots? If that doesn’t scare the living shit out of you, you’re a moron. And nothing illustrates better how vital it is to retain control of the Senate.

I guess they are stuck with Holder for another two years. That should make their day.

Remember the arguments Republicans used to block appointments to the DC Circuit Court alleging that too many judges were on that bench? You’ll hear them utter the same BS when it comes to a vacancy on the Supreme Court!

I’m as disgusted as anyone with the obstructionism in Congress, but if the Republicans control the Senate and the House and continue to ignore appointments and continue to obstruct, I sincerely hope the POTUS finally tells them to go fu*k themselves and vetoes everything they bring to his desk.

No, no. Certain media and some newspaper editorial boards say the GOP will be congenial and work with Pres. Obama to finally get things done.

They’ve obviously been paying attention the last 6 years and surely can’t be wrong, right?

They need to clear the schedule to adjudicate the president’s impeachment, which is exactly what’s going to happen. Why Dems aren’t pressing this more and more to at least keep control of the Senate is beyond me until I remember: ah, Democrats.

“But since we live today essentially in an executive state, the 2016 elections are even more important.”

If we actually lived in an executive state, this story would never have been written because Obama would have just installed whomever he felt like. But, of course, conniving Cato Institute “scholars” are aware of that.

All it would mean is stunts and anything being done would screech to a halt with a lot of teeth nashing. They were doing a bang up job blocking everything before the rules changed, that is why it was changed!

Elections do have consequences, but that was never the GOPs moto until it favors them. If they lose, they are the protectors of liberty. If they win, the voice of the people. So, they present themselves as always right, even if winning on low turn out.

Meh. Nothing we didn’t know already: GOPers/Teatrolls in charge of gov’t do everything to break it in order to “prove” correct their ideology that gov’t is always broken.

I will note, however, that Toobin’s opinions hold a special place in my trash.

Don’t worry, they’ll reconcile the doublethink by saying the GOP/Teatrolls taking over the Senate gives them a mandate. You see, when white conservative douchebags win elections, they get a mandate. Anyone else, particularly black PUTUSes, is treated like they’re a power-crazed socialist dictator pissing on the Constitution.

That’s is, nice strategy. Show the nation you’re not ready to lead the country.

Republicans controlled the senate even when they didn’t have the numbers. They blocked numerous nominations as well. Republicans are awful but at least it would be nice if democrats embodied the republican attitude instead of always trying to work with republicans when they have no intention of returning the favor. I wonder if democrats will use the tactics republicans used on them, I doubt it

Did TPM talk to anybody who wasn’t a right-winger for this piece?

I was just about to write this exact same thing. Jeffrey Tobin was the only person quoted in this that isn’t a Republican operative. Sheesh. I wonder if anyone -else- has an opinion on this.

If god forbid the republicans win the senate, Obama has six weeks to fill every open confirmable vacancy in every agency and court, let’s hope they are ready to have some all night confirmation parties in the senate.

For once, a “Sahil Views With Great Alarm” article I completely agree with.

Though I found the quote from the Georgetown prof who seemed to believe it would be possible for Obama to nominate anyone they would confirm was sweetly naive.

Yes, elections have consequences, except of course the elections of 2008 and 2012. Those didn’t count.

I said the same thing yesterday, and basically that is what he has to do, because you know any of their legislation will only harm what strides this economy has made, and further enrich their wealthy buddies. If they had any legislation that was good for the rest of us, they would have passed it in the House the last four years, and the Dems in the Senate would have happily passed it to, but all they had was their typical fascist crap. There is no reason why this President should not get down and dirty with them, and give them a taste of their own medicine. They have no one to win in 2016, but they have a lot of Senate seats they can lose in that election.

So nothing will change?
More obstruction?

Republicans do not know how to govern, so they prevent governance.
