since Barr decides if Barr is taken to court to be subjected to penalties associated with criminal contempt, I don’t expect that he’s in much trouble on that front.
as for civil contempt, he would only be in trouble if…
- Cummings requested, and was granted, expedited consideration of the civil contempt case
- The supreme court ruled in the Committee’s favor
- Barr defied the Supreme Court
1 is not unlikely
2 is unlikely
3 is extremely unlikely – Barr would probably resign first, rather than defy a direct order of the Supreme Court.
The lame duck session after the 2020 election will be the stuff of nightmares.
So then what’s the downside for him? He obviously doesn’t give a damn about his reputation, etc., at this point.
Yes, yes, YES! Bi-partisan for sure!
Like your thinking here! Better, our Democratic President can issue a blanket executive order and, as stated, mandate a serious adjustment, a do-over or a whole new Census taking (hey, not even the Founders stated no do-over is possible). Then we pack the SC and defy the reupbliscums to challenge the revised results.
none, as far as I can tell.
Parenthetically…
I was getting increasingly annoyed with Maddow telling the world that the way to get Barr to fold was to threaten contempt. It was clear that in the prior two cases, Barr knew he could buy more time by saying he’d provide SOME documents.
We’ve seen that Schiff isn’t getting what he thought he would from Barr.
And all the indications are that Nadler isn’t getting much either. i mean, the white house is reviewing everything before the committee sees it, and the agreement did not include a waiver of executive privilege…
(and in both instances the White house potential court arguments were bad to non-existent)
The difference here is that Oversight wanted a fairly limited number of documents, and there was no room to Barr to maneuver, so he said “bring it”… and they brung it, to no effect whatsoever.
“No matter how much the Department and I cooperate and provide information, the Committee will always twist the facts to suit their own ends,” Ross claimed.
“No matter how much I lie, the Dems will continue to point out that I’m lying,” Ross claimed after taking truth serum.
Haha…I forget why, but we were just laughing in the office about the whole Stonehenge thing from that movie the other day…and the little people dancing around the rock model of it on stage because the model was so tiny lol…
I couldn’t stop thinking about Spinal Tap and the little people dancing (and riffing the gag lines) when I went to Stonehenge 3 years ago.
Oh, and I went to see Spinal Tap perform at the Warfield in SF in 2001 https://www.sfgate.com/music/article/Spinal-Tap-shows-it-can-still-make-noise-2911519.php. Almost caught Nigel’s guitar picked when he threw it into the audience. Bastard directly in front of me put his hand up in front of mine to snag it, LOL!
Saw “A Mighty Wind” concert there a couple years later…
Amash has too much baggage for me to outright support him, but for this instance (impeachment, contempt) one has to admire the guy for standing against his party’s overwhelming tide. I hope he perseveres. If the recent MI Town Halls (where he explained his position) are any indication, his district supports him, and is fed up with Trump and lock-step Republicans.
Trick question. What’s more important is positioning himself for his career in the post-Trump era.
Yikes:
The Articles of Impeachment write themselves.
Amash was also the only Republican to support the subpoenas.
Hey republicans, see what can happen when you set yourself free? Once you decide to make a stand about something its easy to do it again. Amash has quit the cult.
That’s good ole President Donald “I never learn from the past” Trump, driving it home.
Seems to me after this little gem, Bilious Barr might want to ease up on the investigating the investigators bit. If his reputation means nothing to him, perhaps the sound of people laughing in his face does.
This is a perfect opportunity for Pelosi to reverse herself on impeachment.
WAY THE HELL OFF-TOPIC
If Donald Trump cannot be charged with any crime, why the hell should he obey any law? Please, Republicans, I want to learn!!!
Holy Shit - he does not care where the information comes from. It I all good , fair game even if stolen. The DNC emails were stolen, Podesta’s emails were stolen. This is unAmerican and just wrong. He does not care.
ETA: I went over to the tweet and listened to that rotting tub of orange lard. It is bad really bad.
More importantly neither does the GOP, especially McConnell. ETA. Perhaps it’s time for another red “breaking” banner from TPM.
Another gem
