Discussion: House Panel Approves Contempt For Barr, Ross For Defying Census Probe Subpoenas

I beat them to it.

Non-citizens would be excluded from the count used to determine how districts are drawn, shifting political power to whiter, more rural regions of the country.

It’s not as if much of what’s happened recently doesn’t already do this via roll purges and gerrymandering and other shenanigans. It’s that the census question will cement this position for at least ten years with no ability to overturn.

And always keep in mind, Trump minions, keep well in mind that when you get in trouble on his behalf he will not be there for you. He might shed a couple of crocodile tears—“Very unfair, how they were treated”—but he won’t be there to help. He doesn’t like to be around people in trouble; it makes him look bad, like he might be complicit in what got them in trouble. Talk to Manafort. Talk to Cohen. Just check which day is visiting day.

“The subpoenas had the support of one Republican on the committee, Rep. Justin Amash (R-MI).”

Hey Dems: This is the part where you repeat the word “bipartisan” to every single interviewer until they bleed from the ears…got it?

I don’t know, matt. I’m not convinced that Trump won’t swoop in with pardons, possibly before the end of the year to raise the spirits of the minions who think these guys were all treated unfairly (because Trump told them so - good luck to any of them thinking they’d get away with the same activity).

Cummings did good today.

Now, lets hope he follows up immediately, because he should be asking for expedited review of the civil case, given that the census decisions are time sensitive.

That sounds like some “Heavy Duty”, man…

Just remember that even if (as I expect) the Supremes by a 5-4 vote allow the citizenship question to corrupt the census, that doesn’t mean game over. If the Democrats take over both houses of Congress and the Presidency in 2020 they can pass a law that either directs a do-over without the question or directs the census to be “adjusted” to take into account the distortion the question created. Yes, this will lead to a second Supreme Court case, but there is always the nuclear option (court packing) if needed.

The GOP started this war. We need to finish it.

RINO! Traitor! What is more important to Rep. Amash; our Beloved Leader, or the Constitution and Laws of this country?

Ahhh just when I was getting depressed.

I guess anything could happen. I’d suggest to them not to count on it, though.

This is one of the most egregious actions taken by the administration, and was rightly shot down by the courts even before the evidence of Republicans pushing this to increase their power by cheating was known. If the SC really does allow the question, then it’s making it clear Republicans are only out for power no matter the cost. That’s hard to fight against without descending to their level, but if we value this nation as a nation of laws we will have to do it right, and that includes investigating the hell out of it. It should become clear the Republicans are trying to cover up a power grab by changing the Census procedures, and I don’t think Americans will just let that slide.

it may have been in another story, but i’m just curious. what’s the consequences of barr being found in contempt? does that put him on double-secret probation?

That would work out real well for the GOP in 2020!

Haha he’s made his choice and he’s comfortable with it. Tell you one thing, he can give Ben Sasse a disdainful look full in the face and there’s nothing Ben can do about it. Be worth it right there.

He’s let Manafort rot for a year, and now at Riker’s, and that dude was loyal and kept his mouth shut.

Nope, wouldn’t count on a helping hand.

AOC lit some fire into the debate and gave the Dems what they desperately have needed: a tv clip, some outrage, some fight and a f***ing message about getting aggressive on oversight. Amen sister.

Bravo! Congress is an equal branch of government. The Repubs need to be reminded of the meaning of "equal."

This may be of little comfort to consider, but there is a silver lining in this cloud of GOP bullshit. The rethugs know that their party is almost dead (or at least quickly becoming an irrelevant/regional collection of bigots, racists and misogynists). They know the demographics have changed enormously in favor of liberals and Democrats. So, they’re pulling out all stops in a criminal effort to stay relevant. It’s actually good news to see just how lawless and desperate they are, but it damn sure better not result in that horrible question appearing on the census.
