Discussion: House GOPers Say Susan Collins' Health Care Demands Are Dead On Arrival

There have been some huge protests in Maine.

And I know she knows that but I’ll bet you anything that Maine seems ever so far away when she’s in DC with her peeps.

She pretty much makes those headlines though. She has a long history of making noise before a big vote that she won’t go along with the GOP…and then does anyway. She could have much easily have just recorded herself as a “yes” and avoided this and many other headlines heading into this vote. But she didn’t. Instead she made a big show about demanding a fix for CSRs that she knew Ryan was never even going to look at. I mean, Ryan is drooling over the idea of gutting Medicare, Medicaid and Social Security next year, and won’t even take up refunding CHIPs…why in the world would she think he was going to provide funding for Obamacare??

EDIT TO ADD: If I were feeling generous, I would say that she uses this tactic to see if any other republicans will join her in opposing something. When none do, she caves and goes along. Occasionally…(VERY occasionally), like with the healthcare vote., it works and others step forward.

I would add that if this is true, its not a trivial matter. Being that “one vote” is important for enough to build and provide cover for each other. But in her case, its also problematic, because McConnell has seen this show far too many times, so he doesn’t take her seriously. That’s probably why he lied straight to her face and said “Sure, Ryan will make your legislation the top priority. It will absolutely pass”. But then again, McConnell has been lying directly to Senators in his caucus quite a bit this year.

It doesn’t seem logical on any level that I can see since Collins, by report at least, still has political ambitions in her home state but I am convinced of this too.

Insults are meant to be insulting. And I’m not buying that the objection to a “dick, prick or dickhead” rant is that the poor poor bastard at the butt-end of it is the victim of sexism. If anything, it’s solely because the rant is crass.

Anyhoo…ignore me…I’m just venting in response the tax thing, so I apologize in anticipation of calming down and regretting posting that haha

We’re all in need of much stronger meds than the ones we’re currently on. All we have sometimes is big mouthedness.

Since we all know this pile of crap was written by the lobbyists anyway, not the politicians. I’m thinking they spent all their time dreaming up this “negotiating drama” just to make it look like they do anything at all.

There’s some of a lot of different things going on IMO. She puts herself out there in favor or in opposition to something and then waffles, yes. But it seems as if there are an inordinate number of stories about her as opposed to stories featuring the handful of other R female senators. She’s become a target for invective, again IMO, because she has a neurological disorder which affects her speech, and is becoming unattractive as she ages. I have no fondness for her, but women in politics seem to get battered too readily.

I’m zeroing in on some places, my criteria are hours of business and location.

I disagree that all gendered descriptions and insults are inherently sexist, but if you prefer that I just call her an asshole, that works for me.

I keep looking at some scribbles I made while Maddow was on last night with some numbers about the 2018 election. Democrats are going to run 391 candidates, and Rs are going to run 71. These numbers add up to wave election. There’s reason to believe we’re going to lose some of the critters we love to hate

I think she draws the focus of the abuse because more than any other GOP Senator, she seeks out the cameras to pose as an enlightened, even-handed, fair-minded moderate, when in fact, she’s just as much of a lying asshole as the rest of her party. If someone else was out front pretending to be non-partisan as much as she does, that person would be just as much of a target.

reporters swarmed around a stony-faced Susan Collins to ask if she still felt comfortable voting for the tax bill if her health care policies’ prospects in the House are in danger.

Which came first, the reporters swarming or her availability as copy.

Which is a luxury that makes me jealous

Down here, at least in my county, they are still dragging their feet in allowing medical marijuana dispensaries to set up. The state legislation had to be dragged kicking and screaming into a special session just to write the regulations after it was legalized on the ballot in 2016.

It will be interesting to see how Mainers react to Collins getting the shiv that everyone but her saw coming.
There are rich coasties and interior Tea Baggers, but from my limited experience, Mainers do not like being played, and Collins was played, however she tries to swing this.

She’s never struck me as camera-shy. I think she deliberately plays up her image as a supposed moderate and voice of reason. She doesn’t exactly wilt in the corner.
