Discussion: House GOPer: Prisoner Exchange For Bergdahl 'Dangerous'

Discussion for article #223378

So, Mr. Rogers: how much money did we give the Taliban?

In Afghanistan, the Taliban often terrorizes, but it terrorizes mainly Afghanis, no? and havenā€™t we actually been trying to bring the Taliban to the table for peace negotiations and reconciliation with the Afghan government?

The GOP is ridiculous, and the press is their patsy.

ā€œIf you negotiate here, youā€™ve sent a message to every Al Qaeda group in
the world ā€“ by the way, some who are holding U.S. hostages today ā€“ that
there is some value now in that hostage in a way that they didnā€™t have
before. That is dangerous.ā€

This is in opposition to the GOP - who do not believe that U.S. hostages have any value WHATSOEVER.

Unless they have POLITICAL value.

It would be a shame though if one of these guys ends up doing us harm, it will just give the right reason to bitch about Obama even more.

Waitā€¦I thought Mr Rogers was a PBS kids show.

Actually, Mr Rogers the policy is not negotiating with terrorists. We didnā€™t. Thatā€™s why the Qataris were the go between ya dolt.

So Mr. Rogers, what would YOU have done to bring the only US POW home?

Right. Whatever we do, letā€™s not give people with whom weā€™re at war a reason not to just kill any American they capture on the battlefield on the spot. That would be terrible.

The hysteria is laughable. There arenā€™t enough terrorists in the world to fill a high school football stadium on a Friday night in any fly over small town in this entire country.

But the war machine must roll on!

All hail Imperial America!

If Obama had declared war upon a sovereign nation over an insult to his father a decade ago, the GOP would carry him on their shoulders and toss laurels and rosesā€¦at least thatā€™s what they did for the Shrub.

And I find it interesting that there are those condemning the retrieval of an American solder from the enemy.

I say those individuals that deride the president, or label the United States of America imperial, are just butt-hurt, sniveling conservatives with a secret itch for war, zero personal ethics, and 100th percentile IQs. They matter not.

Of course! And doing nothing is ā€˜Safeā€™. The GOPer mantra.

Letā€™s stay current 538. I know you have no argument if you canā€™t keep referring to past hypocrisies and injustices, but I will tell you this: if Obama had ended this war after two years in office I would indeed have tossed ā€œlaurels and rosesā€. But he didnā€™t and he wants at least 2 more years of occupation, for a total of his entire presidency. We are the enemy.

He is right that kidnapping is al-Qaedaā€™s biggest source of revenue. However, a couple of points:

  1. This wasnā€™t al-Qaeda.

  2. Most of the people who are kidnapped are private citizens. And they are negotiated for all the time. The difference is, private citizens donā€™t have prisoners to trade with, all they have is money.

  3. He was kidnapped doing service for our country. We as a nation have a duty to bring him home safely if at all possible. To do so means that in certain situations, we will leave a soldier behind.

  4. If the soldiers have no value because we wonā€™t negotiate for them, then the terrorists will just kill them all instead of keeping them alive in exchange for something good.

  5. Israel does prisoner trades all the time to bring back their servicemen. Would you say that Israel is wrong? I know the official GOP line.

We see now that the very Repuks who voted against increasing security for our embassies which may have helped in Benghazi are now willing to leave a service member behind. as far as dealing with terrorist at least we didnā€™t trade arms with them like Saint Ronald Reagan did.

Two thingsā€¦

When is the good Congressman going to contact the Bergdahl family and ask them to return their son to the enemy ?

Also ā€¦wouldnā€™t it be better if the newest comments showed first ?

Mr. Rogers agreed to a Sunday morning chat before he had time to think about what heā€™d say, and heā€™s also miffed the president didnā€™t ask his permission to release Sgt. Bergdahl.

Is this the same Mike Rogers (R-MI) who asserted that Obama instructed the military in Afghanistan to routinely read Taliban prisoners their Miranda rights?

Understandable, since your suspected traumatic brain injuryā€¦but let me explain in small words that your caretaker can mouth out for you, if and when you regain lucidity: George W. Bush started two wars of choice, and Afghanistan was one of them. President Obama ended that war.
Do you want to talk about Iraq too? Or do you just want to continue to slander the United States like a traitorous Talibangelist for bringing an American warrior home to his family?

Of course the United States is the enemy of right-wing saboteurs and internet cranks like you, Darcy.
