FFS. The Confederate freaking flag is the symbol of those who wanted to tear down the US Federal government, and killed hundreds of thousands of AMERICANS to try to achieve their treasonous goals.

Allowing it on US Federal Cemeteries is a HUGE slap in the face to anyone buried in there who died defending our Country.

Would these @sswipes be ok with folks displaying the ISIS flag in our Federal cemeteries??? Because, you know, freedumb!

The GOP has absolutely no moral compass. It’s just non-existent! They’re simply freaking treasonous racist bigoted incarnations of unadultured dumbf*ckery.

I was chastened to realize that I always think ill of Republicans when SC Rep. Jenny Horne gave her impassioned speech for the removal of the flag at the state capital.

Fortunately Rep. Palazzo came along to restore my negative opinion of his party.

Link to the Horne speech here.

Congress cannot simply re-write history and strip the Confederate flag from existence. Members of Congress from New York and California cannot wipe away 150 years of Southern history with sleight-of-hand tactics…"

This flag isn’t going extinct, it’s merely being removed from federal property. As for rewriting history, the flag has actually been used to sanitize the worst aspects of US history,.

Wouldn’t want bigots to think they need to leave the GOP’s big tent."

Indeed. It would be better done with flamethrowers and bulldozers. Especially since that 150 years of Suth’n histry – Jim Crow, segregation, Klan lynchings and cross burnings – is a blight on the history of the United States. As long as white supremacy remains a “noble cause” so long will its flag be anathema to decent people.

Edited headline:

“Party of Lincoln Plans Last-Minute Vote To Allow Display Of Confederate Flag”

Poor Abe. If he ever knew.

I’d allow the traitor flag to be flown during the funeral for any Confederate Civil War veteran, on the day of his burial and for no more than one hour. Then burn it. (Or bury it with him, just like his cause.)

The traitors flag, call it what it is and the phony shine fades away.
The flag of slave owners that want their slaves back. If the rolls were reversed and whitey had to do some slave time to make everything right and just to see what it is that they promote, this flag battle would be another Appomattox.

Maybe the good Congressman should tell us all about the last “…150 years of Southern history”?

If you listen to virtually any Rethuglican it’s pretty obvious that their goal, like the Confederacy, is to tear down the US Federal Government.

Poor Reince Priebus. Another one of “those” days.

How’s that “Reachin’ out” working 'fer 'ya, Reinse?

That guy really earns the blood money they pay him.

Yeah, but what the hell are you talking about? The last Confederate Civil War veteran died no later than 1959 and that may have been an impostor. It;s not about history in any event: it’s a modern-day symbol of hate, as Darrtown relays below,

Every member of the House should listen to and watch a S. Carolina State Rep’s speech about the Confederate flag. She is a descendent of Jefferson Davis and she said that didn’t matter and wasn’t the issue. She said the flag is a symbol of hate and needs to be off the State capitol grounds now. Today. It’s a great speech. It’s on CNN’s web site.

I would be okay with them flying the Confederate Battle flag at federal cemetaries as long as I can fly my yet-to-be-designed flag alongside them. It will have as much, if not more, historical significance than the CB flag and, even better, will be much more easily interpreted. The white triangular ensign will feature two circular vent holes, and prominently feature the images of a burning church, a noose, a handgun, and a really swell picture of Dylann Root.

Ruh roh. I better trademark it toot-sweet lest it be appropriated by the NRA.

Not to change the subject, GOPers, but how’s that big-tent outreach thing going?

The only reason there ever WAS a Civil War is because our Congress was populated by people who were representative of only the tiniest minority, the deep-south billionaires of their day, the slavers, It wasn’t Texas oil that made them wealthy, either, it was subjugation of their fellow humans that built their profane bottom line.

And they abused our system of representative democracy for the sake of that sliver of the population, instead of for the good of The People, especially blacks in the south.

Here we go again… a tiny sliver of stubborn historical revisionistas are the only beneficiaries of this backpedaling are the flag-worshiping Confederate idealists, and the bigots who have ordained it as their ideological logo.

Anyone who thinks this all harkens back to the mystical, bloody years of that awful war, needs to realize, SOUTH CAROLINA did not fly it as their state flag in the first place until just 50-odd years ago, as a blatant middle finger pointed at segregationists. It was adopted as a symbol of their racist creed, it wasn’t until the Civil Rights era that it gained its dubious legitimacy, it simply wasn’t there all along, even throughout the Jim Crow century.

Only THEY have made it an offense, generated from the racist right towards the center and the left, nothing but a big middle finger pointed at everyone who questioned their motives or demanded it be removed.

The current accepted tradition behind it is contrived, if they hadn’t taken it as their badge of perpetual bigotry in the 50’s and 60’s we would not even be having this debate.

Once again, they are their own enemies, they have profaned any meaning that flag may have had by attaching it to that evil honor. They need to stop blaming the reformers who want to remove it because of what they have turned it into, not because of what it might really mean to the soldiers who fought and starved and died horrible, mangled and bloody deaths under its protection.

They are, once again, their own undoing.
