Discussion: House Freedom Caucus Endorses McCarthy Challenger For Speaker Nominee

I’m pretty sure we’re way past that.

I found this…

The last time it took multiple ballots to elect a speaker was 1923, when it took nine, and in the 19th century it took as long as two months for the House to agree on a leader.

As I understand it Democrats voting present won’t make any difference. He needs 218.

Jeebers!
And it’s raining here in Tucson (looks out the window) Oh, wait…I see some sunlight.

Nope, it’s a majority of votes cast, not a majority of seated members. Nancy can drag it out as long as she wants to drag it out if the Freedumbers continue to vote as a bloc.

Actually, our representative democracy was rendered both moot and impotent when Senate Republicans made the decision to filibuster all legislation back in 2009.

Which she should absolutely not do. Perhaps one vote for Pelosi, but that’s it, and then just vote present and take the position that the GOP/Teatrolls want to lead, want to claim they can govern, etc., so they need to prove it and we have no responsibility to help them figure out their leadership issues…in fact, we’re staying out of it so they can make their own decisions. They need to take advantage of this by being the adults in the room, not get naked and join the GOP/Teatrolls in the wallow. In fact, I would argue not even one vote for Pelosi…just default to “it’s their decision and responsibility, and we’re not going to interfere.” Any delay, waste, mayhem, chaos, shenanigans, clown shows, etc., need to be fully owned by the GOP/Teatrolls on this and any interference whatsoever by the Dems gives the GOP/Teatrolls and the MSM cover and an “out” via false equivalence.

I realize the Republicans have no respect for good governance, but this is getting ridiculous. Our new Speaker is going to be McCarthy, Chaffertz, or this guy. Their Presidential nominee will be Trump, Fiorina, Carson, or some other subpar entity. Pretty scary if you care about America!

There’s an outside chance Pelosi actually gets the most votes in the first round, isn’t there?

That would be a point worth making. Then, yes, after a couple of news cycles the Dems should just vote for McCarthy and/or vote present. Whichever works.

I also have a memory of the speaker actually requiring 218, not just a majority.

Of course, if the Speaker only gets elected because of Dem votes, he’s basically crippled from Day 1, right?

The only freedom the “House Freedom Caucus” desires is the freedom to force the rest of the world to comply with their ridiculous notions of religion and government…they are kooks/nutjobs/freaks/deviants, etc…

Meh. She’s not going to be Speaker. If we want to maintain that the GOP/Teatrolls waste everyone’s time with non-starter legislation they know they can never get past the Senate or Obama or a veto, then I don’t think we should be doing things that are arguably similar. “Nancy got the most votes because of the GOP’s in-fighting, but she could never get enough anyway” doesn’t ring as all that big of a statement in my ears, just silly gamesmanship for political messaging purposes. I know, I know…I howl about the Dems’ failure to message effectively, but I would just point out that the stress is on the word “effectively.”

I don’t think the Dems should vote for any of them. You can’t shit on someone you helped elect. The play is to say “they wanted to govern, they wanted control, they wanted to put on big boy pants and prove they can get things done, and they have the majority, so it’s time for them to prove allof that. Therefore, we’re going to step aside and let them figure this out for themselves.” Then, when 3 weeks have gone by without a Speaker and with the MSM drooling over every salacious gossipy detail of their in-fighting, horse trading and extremist insurgency chaos, they own it all…and the Dems can say “we didn’t do it and we didn’t interfere…this entire mess is of their own doing and it’s up to you to decide what that says about them.”

If McCarthy had any brains, he’d step aside, let Rep. Orville Redenbacher be Speaker and fuck up everything in an election year, then come back.
