Ugh. I had to sit through one of those line-by-line deconstructions once. I let them blather inanely through most of it until they tried to tell me the line ‘We haven’t had that spirit here since 1969’ was a reference to the assassination of JFK, the first Catholic to be President. That’s about where I broke in with ‘Kennedy was killed in 1963…’ and then worked my way backwards through their rubbish, and walked away, with them just kind of sputtering.

You are right Brooklyn guy. I went to a public high school decades ago. I had a great deal of contact with Catholic school kids. At least where I lived in NJ, these kids were, by and large, deeply racist and anti Semitic Blacks were nixxers; Hispanics, were spicks and Jews, kikes.
And this was exactly how their parents spoke. In 1968 they voted for Geo Wallace. Why? "Because them blacks is gettin’ too much for nuthin’ ". Then they became Reagan Democrats.
They were nasty, hateful people.

Yet, the same parents pay tuition to send their children to a parochial school–presumptively because they find public schools fail to instill appropriate values… the head spins. Maybe the Bishop should call all the parents to meet, answer him as to just what’s going on in their homes that they bring this behavior to school.
As the saying goes, racial hate is learned.
Obama was elected in 2008 and 2012. A similar politician would not have been elected 40 years ago. So we are advancing. Just not as quickly as we would like. There is a backlash against such progress and the GOP shows it in spades.

Many of these same families were Kennedy supporters in 60 and would have probably broke for Bobby in 68 since he had the unique ability to appeal to ethnic White’s as well as blacks. After his assassination they went to the Wallace camp.
Yes, you’re probably correct there, but my recollections were of nasty, bigoted people who passed it on to their kids.

Ah, yes, Andrean High School: the private Catholic HS where white Merrillvillians send their children so they don’t have to associate with THOSE people. How very very shocked I am.
What a coincidence - Mr. Roberts is also a product of a NW Indiana Catholic HS whose primary function is to shelter white kids from the diverse world around them.
Indiana is the South’s middle finger to the North, so the saying goes.
