Discussion: Hatch Walks Back Remarks On Hush Payments: Those Comments Were 'Irresponsible'

I’m not trying to be ageist either. I’m 67. I realize many people are just fine through their 90s but the reality is that some aren’t. And yes it becomes evident. I totally agree.

But even in his youth Hatch was an arch partisan and an asshole. I still remember his self righteous speeches about morality during the Clinton era.

In this case age has nothing to do with his behavior.

Agggh, please do not sully our fond memories of Toonces with Victoria Jackson ever again. That is all…

I’m not trying to let him off the hook.

At the very least we need a cognitive test more nuanced than identifying pictures of camels…

Three words: Ruth Bader Ginsburg. (Not that I don’t think she should retire under President Pelosi.)

Constitutionally employed for life.

Interesting.

Brought up to the wife how Hatch is a Mormon, and he basically said breaking the law is okay. As long as you’re a Republican.

She nearly bust a gut laughing…

Believe what he first said. The rest is just damage control.

Virginia 1800, no taxes for anyone over 45… the Congress reps needed to be able to get to NY by horseback and read until midnight by candlelight…

The Mormons are no better or worse than all the Porn Again Christians who believe St. BLOTUS was sent to them by god to lead us from Obama et al.

This is just one of many reasons I detest organized religion.

This AP story has a very brief summary of the role that Hatch played in the lynching of Anita Hill during the Clarence Thomas hearings.

Once an asshole always an asshole. No need to invoke dementia or age to explain his behavior.

Well the Mormons haven’t let the laws of the United States stand in their way much either until they were forced to abide by them and a whole bunch of them still don’t.

I believe we do need age limits. Never thought I would say that but the older I get the more I realize age limits are needed. Hatch has just about destroyed a decent legacy in the Senate. I would think 76-78 as the cut off. Any other opinions?

That works for me. It needs to be addressed since we’re living longer but not staying young any longer. And frankly until they get that worked out I’d just as soon not live into my 90s.

Yeah. How do you justify (i.e. please cite supporting evidence) any implication that there was ever a “decent legacy” for Hatch to defend?

Well, he is a Republican so the bar is low.

There are a lot of Mormons who really don’t like Trump.

As a good friend of mine points out, they have all kinds of ways to help us live longer, they just keep adding the years to the wrong end…

That’s the problem! If they could just figure that out I’d be so happy to live a hundred years. I do not find that a thrilling prospect however, given that I will just be old and it isn’t a lot of fun. It hurts for one thing. hahaha
