I agree that from a judicial expertise, he did more harm than good and there is a lot to dislike about him. Some of the personal stuff does my me uncomfortable though. It’s probably the ex-Catholic school girl decorum that’s so embedded in me. But, I say, have at. Sometimes it can be cathartic to let loose! ETA, that probably sounds rich coming from a go for the jugular potty mouth arguer like me.

I guess, for me, in the case of Scalia it is the fact that he didn’t merely dissent. Read the vitriol and rage in all of his dissents concerning any major gay rights case of the past 10 years. He didn’t just offer a scholarly dissent. He wrote things about gays with a broad brush, equating gays with pedophiles and murderers. Being gay, I took what he wrote personally. If any other conservative justice were to have died today, I would have had a much more blasé response and would have focused on the political intrigues for an election year. Scalia’s passing, though, I’ll view with glee.

Lame ducks Harry Reid and Barack Obama may be two men with no fucks left to give, which may make them dangerous for the Republicans in this situation. I would love to see the two of them raise hell and play some hardball partisan politics. Play some chess, men, and back the GOP into a corner.

I’ve never wished him harm, but I am not sorry he no longer has a voice on the Supreme Court. He was an awful man and his assholishness on the bench of the highest court in the land has been so harmful to so many.

Well, I know folks who literally threw a dinner party the day Ronnie Reagan died–primarily for his role in the AIDS epidemic–so I will not at all be surprised to hear some fireworks tonight.

Beginning with his dissent in Lawrence v. Texas in 2003. He wrote that Kennedy’s decision would lead to the ruling in favor of Same Sex Marriage. At that point, with a Republican in the White House to name his successor, Scalia should have realized that time had passed him by, that he would continue to be on the losing side of civil rights, and resigned.

I think he got a lot of credit as a brilliant jurist almost solely (at least, in later years) on the ability to write zingers into his opinions rather than any sort of legal logic.

Right. I think you can be glad about the future direction of the court without being happy a person has passed (but I also understand the vitriol)

A brilliant jurist is one who can sway a majority opinion. Writing biting dissents doesn’t signify brilliance.
