Discussion: Harris Shutters State Campaign Cmte. In Another Sign Of Her 2020 Intentions

It drives Trump to madness when he’s challenged by a woman, on anything. I’m unsure which woman among many would be his best challenger, but a woman at the top of the 2020 ticket would assure Trump dials up his idiocy and misogyny to “11” on the dial.

I half expect his border wall to have a “No Gurlz Aloud” sign on it.

Just seems too early in her national career to be planning a run. She’s been attorney general in CA, but not Governor and she’s only been a Senator for 2 years. Seems like a 2024 run would make more sense and give her time to build political connections.

Harris appeared on the View yesterday. My wife was deeply impressed. She said Harris is the kind of candidate she could get behind.

She’s very good in her serious prosecutor mode, the only way I’ve seen her on committees. We need to see what other qualities she has as a campaigner.

I’m at a point where I don’t care if the candidate coming out of the primaries is male, female, brown, or white. But it had better be a world-class, Obama-level campaigner who can fire up crowds, as well as being qualified in other areas.

There will be a lot of no(s) on that wall if he has his druthers.

I would disagree - watching her many times in committee hearings, she is knowledgeable, tough, persistent, and able to get to the bottom of much of the propaganda Administration witnesses try to shovel. I’m glad to see her enter the race - a tough, smart, accomplished woman is what Trump fears most.

Best way to build the important political connections for that is to run in 2020. There is no downside to her doing so, particularly with a crowded field.

Indeed, I think Castro missed a huge opportunity not running in 2016, for precisely the same reasoning. He would have been cast as a rising star and been better situated to push for a VP slot, and vastly improved his name recognition. Now, he is viewed as a lightweight with no significant national experience. I like the guy, but as this field fills up, he is going to be pushed to the sidelines both with voters and donors.

While I don’t doubt that Harris is serious about running, it makes sense to close down these state committees now that she has become a U.S. senator regardless of her POTUS ambitions.

That’s it in a nutshell – someone who’ll make the president look exactly as ridiculous as he is in comparison.

So was Barack Obama.

That’s a bad idea for a number of reasons. First, I hope like hell that in 2024 we’ll have a Democratic incumbent running for reelection. Secondly, I imagine whomever that person is will have a VP who’ll want to run in 2028. Third, right now is her best shot because she won’t have to worry about running against a sitting VP or a sitting Democratic president or, most importantly, a field clearing favorite. The field is as wide open as it’s going to get. Lastly, even if she doesn’t win the nod, a good showing in the primary could get her the VP slot and set her up nicely for 2028. Yes, she’s only had two years in the Senate, but the greatest president of my lifetime only had the same amount of time and, as AG of CA, she’s got exponentially more experience than he did.

Harris had a tour de force roll out yesterday. Her interview on The View was a delight to watch, especially when she dunked on Trump’s wall. She has been my #1 for a while and I felt pretty good about my choice yesterday. She’s going to run and it’s going to completely upend the Democratic Primary.

What I want in a candidate is someone who will root out the corruption that we have seen from the Trump people. A “swamp drainer” if you will. If Harris will be that person, then that is all the firing up that I need.

I agree she has the perfect skill set for rooting out corruption, but the next President will have a shitload of other things to deal with. Trump will leave the USA in a perilous economic position, with broken treaties, troops still in Afghanistan (probably), China pushing for strategic dominance in the East, and a 4-year backslide on climate change. Prosecutor skills are great, but I have no idea how she’d handle all that.

Actually I think Biden is probably the best all-rounder in that respect, but he’s too old and a terrible campaigner. I don’t want to see him run.

Pretty much. Her qualifications are fine and she’s clearly shown to be up to today’s challenges

But, is she fun and can she get crowds excited? Well spoken, good on committees is one thing, talking in front of crowds is another. Not saying she should/shouldn’t just wondering.

I’m with you on Biden. Tammy Duckworth is my current favorite for 2020, but I doubt she will run.

I agree, and I felt the same way about Obama — that his résumé was rather thin and that he should gain more experience before running a national campaign. Someone expressed this view publicly, and Michelle Obama said, “Oh, they’re always telling the black man he has to wait.” I found this remark to be inappropriate, because, as is obvious from my introductory sentence, I felt that those who believed Obama wasn’t ready to be president had a legitimate cause for concern and that what Mrs. Obama had done was play the “race card” card.

Of course I was ready to support whatever Democrat won the nomination and voted for Obama both times.
