The suffering and death of your grandchildren is a sacrifice the Kochs are willing to make.

They have 59 with 2 on the fence. Vote is called for around 6:15. Obama will veto but only because the issue falls under his regulatory authority. He will probably instruct the relevant agency to move forward after the lame duck.

Still can’t believe this guy is being replaced by Ernst.

What the fucking fuck, Iowa?

He should never have retired.

Then again maybe he had internals saying his re-election wasn’t a sure thing.

It’s either going by pipeline or by rail. Not sure which is more economical though I suppose a pipeline would create a few jobs and line the pockets of lawyers who already have jobs. Either option presents potential environmental hazards.

Actually, Trans-Canada is refitting a little-used natural gas pipeline (with some additions) that will run from Alberta to Nova Scotia ports to carry the tar sands crude.

It will cost less than Keystone, and keeps the entire mess in Canada.

The whole keystone megilla may be a moot point.

There’s light, sweet crude, and there’s heavy, dirty crude, and then there’s the Tar Sands, which is the absolutel worst possibly crude that can be extracted from this earth. This oil will have absolutely zero benefits, other than financial returns to the people who own the proprietary rights to that oil. Use of this oil will accellerate the pace of our own destruction. It is extremely costly to extract. It is more expensive to transport to refineries. and it is the most expensive to convert into useable fuel. That same investment could/should be used in other ways. Forget energy independence. We are completely, insanely dependent on fossil fuels for everything we call American. The XL will only increase our dependence on oil, from anywhere on this planet where we can get it. We’ll all be the worse for it, too. Insanity on steroids.

Once again, we witness the burden the Democratic Party has in actually giving a shit about other human beings.

The graves are already dug:

Brilliant and so very, maddeningly true. It would be so easy if one could make themselves not give a shit. I’ve been trying hard not to care since the election (why care about people who don’t care about themselves?) but you can’t shut it off. It’s a blessing and a curse, and it’s one of the many reasons why I’m a Democrat.

The rhetoric is a bit overblown on both sides. This particular pipeline is not going to make or break the development of the Tar Sands oil, which already moves by rail. Transcanada has already applied to build a pipeline across Canada to the Atlantic Coast. Oil is now approaching $70/bbl. At that price any further development of the Tar Sands may be put on hold, pipelines or no pipelines.

OTOH, the jobs created are laughably few and there will be lost rail jobs. The pipeline could well be a job killer.

If I were Obama, I’d threaten a veto and then say I’ll sign Keystone in exchange for a few of MY priorities (minimum wage increase, ACA fixes, a pony,)

Indeed it does, thanks to the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission. I wonder which branch of government they fall under.

Ding Ding Ding! That’s exactly what I think the president should do. He should use it to play chicken with the GOP over items on his agenda. When they refuse to do move the president’s agenda forward he can say, “Hey, I told them I’d approve it today if they passed x,y, and z, but they refused. I’m not the one holding up the pipeline. They are!” IMO, the Keystone pipeline was always a great bargaining chip and I suspect the administration has known that all along.

Befuddled old man thinks the plutocrats in control of the country care about our grandchildren. Story at 11.

Landrieu won’t be saved by her shilling for KXL, Harkin is right (as far as it goes) and KXL is already being supplanted and so any US legislation on it rapidly approaching kabuki theatre and superfluous.

I agree, but this is from the guy who forced ethanol subsidies on us (raising crop prices and burning gas to make more gas), so it’s a bit late to be comin’ to Jesus.
