I can say from my own trips to Nogales, AZ that there is more than enough “wall” in town. Trump’s anti Mexican rhetoric has killed what was a vibrant and very friendly Calle Obregon shopping district. He is exceedingly unpopular on both sides of the border in Nogales and all of Santa Cruz County which was deep red country.

Graham should think about sitting down with mid-west senators who are up for re-election in 2020.
Farmers are being quoted saying things like, “I need a check, not some damned wall.”

Agreed, but I don’t think his base is 40% of the population. I think it’s more like 20- 25%, and some of that will eventually be hurt enough by his inability to govern that they will turn away from him, too. If Nixon is an example (and I happen to think it is a good example), we won’t be able to evict Induhvidual One from 1600 until his approval rating is in the 25% range.
We need to get Homer and Cletus to the point of saying “No” to Trump, and we need the thinking Hillary haters to realize they made the wrong choice.

I was recently hunting along the border in south eastern Arizona with someone who has hunted there for years. He commented that he used to come across two or three groups of immigrants in a week down there. But in recent years he is seeing none.
So much for the alien hordes.

Brick & mortar retail is dying everywhere. Sears isn’t shuttering because of anything Trump did. Today’s vibrant is tomorrow’s abandoned.
The $5.7B would end up building a wall along about one tenth of the border. Most places don’t need a wall but I doubt trump understands jack about the border lands. He has said the trip here is a photo op and he expects to learn nothing. That is what he said. I say … drop him off in the Big Bend country and let him walk out. Let him try and find a road.

First:

That reads to me as an implicit admission by Graham that Trump is holding the country hostage for his wall. We all know its true, and so does Graham.
Second:
Think big, folks. I’d give Trump $10 billion for the wall in exchange for immigration reform and a carbon tax. Trump’s base would hate immigration reform. The Republican donors would hate a carbon tax. Democrats would have healthcare as an issue and two wins for 2020. Trump is desperate and panicked enough to take a deal like this.
Or not, but let’s not broadcast it!

The last time I was down in Juarez (and that was about 6 years ago), the “fence” was chain-link on both sides of the Rio. The river was a concrete channel. It wasn’t much of a barrier.
I said thinking Hillary haters. Neither of those qualify.

There’s never been a Sears store in Nogales, Sonora. And the entire city is in dire straights due to the lack of tourists visiting and crossing the border for vacations at points south. What i described isn’t the same as brick and mortar problens here.

That’s the Rio Grande. I doubt a wall is needed there. And rafting used to be really a popular sport there.

Barriers are not needed outside urban areas. I’m unconvinced but persuadable that they are necessary in urban areas.

50 of my 70 years have been spent within 50 miles of the border or south of it. I know for certain I got more time in grade on this subject than trump does.

People told me when I lived there that 15 years ago there would be groups of 80 coming across, but more recently it’s a few individuals seeking a better life. Although I also heard from someone that experienced it there were armed coyotes transporting drugs that told him they’d kill him if he reported them.

I would add protection for any refugee who is threatened with deportation (as long as they aren’t convicted of a crime).
