Discussion: Gov. Corbett: Reform Liquor Laws So It's Easier For Women To Make Dinner

Discussion for article #226942

“Pennsylvania Gov. Tom Corbett ® thinks his state should reform its
liquor laws. That way, he argued, women would have an easier job making dinner.”

Daniel, Daniel, Daniel.

May I suggest you visit the liquor ghetto that is the state-run monopoly wine and spirits store. I make dinner too, and I’m white, male, fat, and ugly.

This isn’t about Corbett singling out women to make dinner. This is about making it easier for Pennsyltuckians to self-medicate while being violated by the fossil fuel extraction industry.

I think a lot of people want to be able to walk into a grocery store," Corbett said. "Particularly, a lot of the women, want to be able to go in and buy a bottle of wine for dinner,

This reads like some consultant told Corbett to court “The Woman Voter” by discussing policy changes from a woman’s perspective.

…And Tommy doesn’t really know what that means. At all.

Stick a fork in him, because he’s done.

Their liquor laws are really dumb. Why do only the Repubs want to reform them? Do the Dems really think being able to buy beer & wine at the grocery store will somehow hurt their state?

p.s. I agree he mucked up his argument though.

Well, I think with a little planning, the ladies should be able to manage just fine, as is.

Time to start thinking ahead, gals.

Oh yeah. We’re being fracked to death. Thanks govner.

It’s complicated and I’m no expert, but Dems are sorta pro-worker-benefits and pensions (me too!) and the stores bring in big bucks to the treasury.

Yep, he been done, but the thing is, this argument, even in the ham-handed misogynistic way he makes it, is persuasive to the typical “Obama-is-a-n!gger” white blue collar economic victims who used to think of themselves as Democrats. They aren’t hearing the misogyny. They’re hearing lower prices and greater convenience, and when it comes to booze, that shit counts.

This is a classic case of “Even a broken clock is right twice a day.” Sexist comments aside, Pennsylvania does have truly nutty liquor laws.

FINALLY something we can all agree with a GOTP governor on.

Most (many?) of the grocery stores around here (in Ca) are unionized and are good benefit jobs… The liquor stores and restaurants not so much…

What century do we live in again??? This guy is a misogynist prick.

This is a stupid article, TPM. First, he said “buy” dinner, not “make” it. Second, the liquor laws in PA are ridiculous and absolutely need to be reformed. This comment won’t hurt him. Corbett has said plenty of other boneheaded comments that should damage him much worse.

Exactly what I was thinking. They’ve got some really stupid liquor laws in PA but his argument is absolutely silly.

One reason Corbett is not going to win reelection is because he did not get rid of the state liquor and wine monopoly, and make it possible to buy all alcoholic beverages in a single store.

No one except some people who regret the end of Prohibition and state liquor store clerks who get lifetime pensions at taxpayer expense (and the many politicians from both parties who get their union’s gob smacking generous campaign contributions) want these stores to continue, but the legislature has so many factions that want different and big pieces of whatever replaces the current system, and no one powerful enough to knock heads to get the job done, that the job did not get done. Corbett did not even try— even the Republicans in the legislature hate him. (Hate is not strong enough a word.) This ad is an example of the kind of stupid stuff we have been hearing from Corbett for the last four years, and why he will the first Pennsylvania incumbent governor ever to be voted out of office.

Wow, has anyone ever checked if Gov. Corbett was actually replaced with Leslie Nielsen? You never know by some of his statements and policy reform.

I really think most Republicans just can’t help themselves but bringing in gender or race into policy discussions that have nothing to do with either.

How about you making dinner, Corbett? Liquor laws aside, this statement irks me. It’s just another statement placing women in a subservient position instead of the privileged position of men. Women also work outside the home so why is it okay that women be strapped with making dinner every night while hubby comes home and reads the paper or watches TV? Take turns cooking and doing the clean up afterwards.
Iowa used to run state liquor stores too, however, I don’t know if they still do that. It’s really kind of crazy that you can’t buy booze at the grocery or convenience store. It’s not like people will become alcoholics if they can buy their liquor at the grocery store.

I must admit that PA and Ohio among others have antiquated booze laws. But never the less if my better half were to get hold of what the good Gov. has pronounced she’d go on the internet warpath. It would not be pretty. I’ll do my best, Gov, but I cannot guarantee anything.

Oh my imaginary invisible sky being!

From the LCB annual report for last year, total revenues were $2170M (2,17B) compensation was $130M or 6.35% of gross sales, down year over year from a high of 7.25%.   That’s a small part, and going down.

Gross profit was $539M, a profit of 31.2%.   Not only that, $311M in liquor tax, $121M in state sales tax, and another $80M in spare change was transferred to the General Fund.

So the sales tax collected alone just about pays for all the employees and everything else is gravy for the state.

But oh noooooo! It’s those employees insisting they have a decent salary, health benefits, and a pension! Evil bastards!
