Shorter GOP: we need to get a tax cut for our donors and the Trump family. We will say anything, however stupid, to do it.
And we want a country that creates innovation and creates hope, so that somebody growing up in poverty can be successful, could be wealthy, if they invent an idea and they take it all the way to success.â
Actually, we HAD a country like that for the middle part of the 20th C. Taxes on the wealthy were even higher than they are now. The word this dummy is looking for is âopportunityâ and itâs pretty much gone now, replaced with an oligarchy and robber barons of the 21st C.
And itâs not class warfare to say that I have healthcare and you donât?
âHow is it class warfare to ask whether or not Americans making over $1 million a year, who now pay nearly 40 percent in income tax, should continue to pay that?â
Jesus F*CKING christ. This is what passes for âjournalismâ at CNN these days? âPoppyâ failing to understand the concept of marginal tax rates, and passing along her intellectual failings to millions of viewers?
The average tax rate for millionaires is around 20-25% blended. CAN WE PLEASE GET SOMEONE ON TV WHO CAN EXPLAIN THIS?
No.
Very stupid to contemplate such a position, even more stupid to utter it. The Stupid Party rolls on. Is raising the lowest rate from 10% to 12% also class warfare, Mr. Russell?
Iâm thinking this guy needs âECON 101â. No one is throwing rocks. No one is âjealousâ which you seem to imply and most importantly no one who makes over $1,000,000 is paying that kind of tax rate. Itâs BS. A dodge. DO check your âfactsâ Congressman before you make spurious comments. Oh andâŚtrickle down is BS and doesnât work. Just so you knowâŚ
Says the man who hails from a state where many school districts have cut the school week down to 4 days.
How much âinnovation and hopeâ is being created there?
What he is trying to say, and he is very, very bad at saying it, is to put forth the argument that ârich people pay the majority of taxes in this countryâ.
This particular discussion should never be about which PEOPLE pay taxes, it should be about which INCOME is taxed, and at what rate.
If someone doesnât want to pay more taxes, make less income and forgo all the things that extra income allows them to do.
You SOBs keep equating taxation with class warfare and you may end up with a literal class war on your hands some day. Itâs happened before.
I see that as an example of the tremendous messaging power of the Republicans and the failure of the Democrats to counter it for going on decades. When âregularâ people discuss tax policy, they do in the terms and the context that Republicans have relentlessly pushed.
It still shocks me how many people â including many passionate liberals â donât understand how marginal tax rates work, and that a person earning $1 million/yr isnât paying 39.6% of that entire sum in income taxes. Iâve had many arguments over the years with people claiming that itâs not fair that a person getting a raise could actually lose money in the deal because of taxes. And itâs appalling how many people still buy into the idea that granting rich people more money will create more jobs.
These beliefs are all because of extremely effective and tenacious Republican propaganda.
The Republicansâ whole thing in the 21st century (and, quite frankly, well before that) is to push the envelope as far as possible, confident that Democrats/liberals will save the day â and absorb political losses to do so. Theyâre basically the supervillain that drops a damsel off a bridge to make their getaway â they know the hero will save the innocent person rather than chase them.
Problem is, as you pointed out, eventually the envelope gets pushed too far. Sadly, many Americans are nearing their breaking point â if not for an actual violent reaction, then enough for a strong political anti-establishment movement. Unfortunately, Republicans fâing co-opted that and elected Trump with it, and now a huge portion of it is siding with their tormentors because theyâre too stupid, angry and selfish to see which way is up.
Weâre in real trouble here.
Itâs only class warfare when we do it.
Well said. Paying more in taxes is always a choice. If you want to pay less in taxes, then make less money â hell, maybe even distribute it to your employees so they can understand your pain!
Yep, R + OK = Asshole. Sad.
Advocate of class warfare declares class warfare is dividing the country he tirelessly works to divide. Got it.
As Warren Buffett wrote in one of his Annual Reports, I paraphrase âOur current tax-system is class-warfare and, as far as I can see, the rich are winningâ.
ââŚhaving been a soldier most of my life, I never accumulated that kind of wealth.â
"âŚsomebody growing up in poverty can be successful, could be wealthy, if they invent an idea and they take it all the way to success.â
I believe Trump when he says he would not personally benefit from tax cuts. I take it as his admission that he doesnât pay any income taxes and hasnât for years.
There have to be good reasons why he refuses to release his income tax returns (and the fact that they may be being audited is not among them.).
