Congressman, I know he didn’t come from your district, but a fellah from Missouri named Truman had some advice for politicians a few years back. Something about not being able to take the heat…You might want to look that up.
" He left River City the library building but he left all the books to her…" . Meredith Willson was a pretty astute sociologist.
Now that’s refreshing, somebody actually practicing journalism. Mr Scheinblum should provide training to the DC Press Corps on how to be more than stenographers.
Just how red is Blum’s district?
It’s encouraging to see that the protests are getting under these guys’ skins. Especially if they were stupid enough to kowtow to Drumpfie and vote “yes” on this stinkbomb. May their lives be hell until they are voted out of office – hopefully next year.
"I have always said the process was bad. It was rushed. There should have been hearings.”
Well, Congressman, you could have stood up and voted against the bill on that basis. You could have stood up for a legislative process that the people who elected you can believe it. But you didn’t.
Blum is inexperienced and was already a good candidate to lose his seat next year. District 1 ain’t the west of the state, Steve King country. In 2016 he beat a mediocre candidate 54-46. The defensiveness in the interview combined with these piss-poor answers above–where he is basically AGREEING with the constituent that they shouldn’t have rushed the process–tell me the dude is very nervous about 2018. Already.
“I don’t represent all Iowans — I represent the First District of Iowa,” Blum replied.
“Would you still take donations from a Republican in Iowa City?” Scheinblum asked in response.
At that point, Blum stood up to leave the interview.
That had to sting.
The Iowa 1st Congressional District has leaned blue until the last 2 Congressional elections. In 2016, Trump beat Clinton 49-45. In 2012, Obama beat Romney fairly handily 56-42. Until Trump narroly carried Dubuque County in 2016 by a fraction of a percent, no Republican Presidential candidate had won Dubuque County since the 1950s. The district has always been fairly blue collar/union dominated.
Thanks for the helpful info. So…if the tide continues to swing against Trumpcare, there is a possibility the tide will carry Blum out with it??
Despite the lying Paul Ryan people recognize Deathcare for what it is. If it’s not going to physically kill you it will destroy your financial security.
“Deathcare”. Like it.
I think Blum will likely be on the list of the most endangered House Republicans in 2018. But then I thought that for 2016. A lot of it will depend on the quality of his Democratic opponent and Trump’s (un)popularity in the coming year. Blum was known as the “down-to-earth everyman” when he was first elected in 2014. His antics more recently (storming out of a simple interview) are showing his more prickly/entrenched politician side. That won’t wear well in this district.
Democrat Bruce Braley represented this district until he ran for Senator against pig castrator Joni Ernst. It was widely believed that he lost that election because of a comment he made about Chuck Grassley being a “farmer from Iowa with no law degree” heading the Senate Judiciary committee. Straying from “Iowa nice” is the death knell for most Iowa policiticians not named Steve King.
But…but…THE CONTROVERSY is the most important part of “journalism”!!

That might have been the case back in the day, but today’s Iowa Republicans are basically like the lunatics in Kansas: cretinous Biblical Literalist ignoramuses who are completely in the pocket of large corporate interests.
Though I like the idea of pinning it on Trump, Deathcare may be just the branding we are looking for to stop this disaster.
I saw this on another site. Trump will hate it because it might stick.
If I had the slightest confidence that we still have a democracy, I’d say I smell a wave election. But don’t think for a minute Vlad and his pals in the DeVos/Spectrum network and their fellow travelers in the Kochtopus Empire, thirty odd state legislatures and electoral official offices won’t be doing everything possible to prevent that.
Never run away again! This is the product for the Republican who just cannot cope with the harsh and glaring light of truth. The privacy zone stays with you at all times. Portable, low profile and comfy. Immediately deployable at the drop of a hat or an uncomfortable question. Dry clean only, Not guaranteed against stains resulting from spittle, bile or golden showers.
After the 2016 rout, the Iowa Democrats lost the State Senate. It was the last check on Republican Governor Terry Branstad and the Republican House of Representatives. As a result, the Republicans did all sorts of crazy stuff this legislative session: Collective barganing gutted, abortion restrictions established (most of which will be overturned), Stand Your Ground legislation, voter ID, expanded gun rights, etc. The damage done this legislative session will set Iowa back decades, unless the tide turns back in 2018.
On a positive note, Governor Branstad is getting out of Iowa (finally) to be Trump’s Ambassador to China. The Lieutenant Governor stepping into the Governor’s office, Kim Reynolds, is flawed/unqualified and must run for election in 2018. With a strong Democratic candidate, she could be defeated.
