Discussion: GOP Rep. Grilled About Health Care In Raucous Iowa Town Hall

Absolute agreement on how Braley blew it. He should have known better than to say anything that stupid. Losing Harkin’s seat to Ernst was a terrible blow. And Ernst may have run her campaign like a Bachman-know-nothing, but she’s shown cunning in office. For instance she occasionally portrays herself as a trump skeptic. Of course she isn’t, in reality she’s another rubber stamp for whatever craziness he comes up with. But for all the pig-castration jokes she appears to be saavy enough to know it’s gonna be a tough relect in 2020. We need good, solid candidates against both her and Blum.

“I have always said the process was bad,” Blum replied, per the Huffington Post. “It was rushed. There should have been hearings.”

And you voted for it anyway. So what does that say about your principles Mr. Blum?

Why ID - because he believes that altright blather about Soros paying people from “outside of districts” to protest. Very defensive posturing, I agree. Wonder how much more defensive he will get when his staff finds that these are not “paid Soros bused in protesters” from Chicago and Minneapolis, but actual his constituents - who vote.

That’s a sick burn question because the answer is of course he’d take the money from someone outside his district. All of them do. Whats’ frustrating is that this Rep’s vote to cut taxes impacts each and every citizen, so he should hear from it from people outside his district.

These town halls lay bare the cowardice in the republican party.

Notice how he kept repeating how in the past two years he held teletownhall meetings which reached 6000 people - far more than would show up in person. Do tell us more - who gets to be a part of those calls? Donors and precinct chairmen?

When one cloisters oneself in a padded bubble, it gets tense when one has to interact with people in the real world.

To hear Republicans tell it, there is nothing they like about the bill, they disapprove of the process they used to pass it, and they don’t expect it to make it through the senate, but they simple had no choice, they had to vote for it.

Blum believes a lot of right wing blather and crazy stuff. I was at the town hall last night. He started off the town hall by saying that there were threats of violence called into his office yesterday. At one point Blum asked, “As a man, why should I have to buy insurance that covers pregnancy??” Showing that he doesn’t understand how insurance works (Congressman Blum, women have to pay insurance to cover your erectile dysfunction, treatments for prostate cancer, testicular cancer, etc.). He also said that the world has never been more green because plants LOVE carbon dioxide and are thriving right now eating up all that bad carbon dioxide. Additionally, he talked about some single-cell organisms that have recently emerged that are eating all the excess carbon, baffling most in the auditorium. He did at least acknowledge that Earth is 4-5 billion years old, so he’s not a fundy creationist. Otherwise, the man is a buffoon.

Who would make this bumbling, near-senile, and drooling fool an ambassador, let alone to China?

He meant Republicans. How do you think they generate all that hot air.

Its the one decision Trump has made that will actually benefit Iowa. Kudos to Trump for taking Branstad out of Iowa!

I watched the video last night and couldn’t figure out what was going on with him walking out of that interview. It all became clear when I read the WaPo story this morning. I especially loved reading that all the “prescreened” attendees gave him the what-for treatment other republicans tried to blame on “outside agitators.”

Hilarious!!!

From now on, we call it Trumpcare or Deathcare.

Yes, he received his largest funding form a NC republican’s (Meadows?) PAC and the Club For (not-your) Growth.

Well, Iowans better develop a thicker skin before that’s taken from them, too. State’s in a world of hurt. How it’s changed since we lived there in the 90’s! Wow.

Xi Jinping and Terry go way back. Like college buds. There is a lot of ag business done between Iowa and China. To an extent that would surprise a lot of Americans.

Props to Josh Scheinblum. There ought to be more badgering in this business.

Thanks for the report. He sounds like he drinks to frequently at the well of Fox, and talk radio. Glad he is getting his 15 minutes of national fame - it makes him look so inept, aloof, ignorant and, well, weak.

Per the “how insurance works”: I have to wonder whether these folks (GOP in Congress) think we (the voters) are so dumb, that we don’t understand how insurance works so they roll out this “say anything” ala Fox news, or if they really are that ignorant.

My personal hope is that these assholes spend the next 18 months living in their reich wing bubble. It will suck for us, but we’ll be better off in the long run.
