Discussion: GOP Rep. Can't Say Whether He Would Support Trump As Nominee

Discussion for article #244154

Gibson is my Congressman. He has a doctorate in political science or the like, runs a tight congressional office and is VERY conservative. He is not however stark raving mad and is trying to get some distance between himself and his deranged Republican comrades. He seems to want to run for Governor of NY next election and he needs to go way left from his five standard deviation points to the right current position if there is any chance of succeeding.

I will work very hard for his opponent. He is the kind of guy who could vote to privatize Social Security, Medicare and Medicaid in the afternoon and attend a fund raiser for children who canā€™t afford their own Lacrosse sticks in the evening.

But he would support Ted Cruz??!??

[Gibson added that he understands whatā€™s ā€œdrivingā€ the support for Trump.

ā€œI saw this coming,ā€ he said]

About two months into the Obama administration, I saw it coming

Shorter Gibson: ā€œI canā€™t support that guy ā€¦ i can only ride his coat tails to victory.ā€

Oh yeah, which is why Ted is gonna cruz to the nomination. Heā€™s already picked up a large swath of Carsonā€™s Evangelical nutjob supporters, and as Trump continues his bull-in-a-china-shop stampede, more and more GOPers whoā€™ve been sitting on the fence will announce their support for Cruz.

I know about the train of a brideā€™s dress, but if Cruz were ever to be sworn in as President, I would expect to see a lizard-like tail in his wake.

ā€œI have told people before Iā€™m prayerful that you will see some kind of evolution in this guy.ā€

He get as ā€œprayerfulā€ as he likes. No way he can ride on Rumpā€™s coattails. Not here in NYS as Red as the upstate is. If heā€™s running for Gov. and Iā€™m assuming that Schneiderman has his eye on that prize as well, heā€™ll have to distance himself in some way.

This is one of the many things that has the potential to make 2016 a whole lot of fun for Democrats. Remember all those red state Democrats in 2014 who were repeatedly asked if they voted for Obama? Turnabout is fair play, and many GOPers in blue and purple states and districts will be forced to answer whether or not they support their nominee. For folks like Charlie Dent there will be no possible way to answer that question without risking significant backlash from the right or left. Republicans who refuse to support their nominee will also face public scoldings and/or potentially having their nominee publicly supporting a third party candidate, especially if Trump is their nominee. Folks like Ayotte will have to decide whether theyā€™ll choose to lose with dignity or burn down the house and lose shamefully. Either way, itā€™ll be fun to watch.

My Congresscritter also (New Paltz here) Heā€™s definitely running for Governor. Voted against PPACA after 25+ years of receiving publicly-financed healthcare via the Army and Reserves. Saw him in Kingston earlier in the year, head-faking by making ā€œreasonable, centristā€ noises, but in the end heā€™s a reliable team player who always falls into line when it comes to voting the R line.

I remember in 2004 just about every Dem in a red or purple state was asked if they were going to support Kerry just to watch them squirm. I hope the media does the same thing to the GOP this election cycle. Put them on record to see if they are going to stand with Trump. Maybe we can win the house back too.

It isnā€™t for him.

He hasnā€™t said it yet, but Trump is seen by most ā€˜establishmentā€™ GOP insiders as a Vandal whoā€™s now crossed two or three hills and can clearly see the prize from that vantage point.

They see the consequences of a Trump win plain as day.

However like that Eddie Murphy routine, they are willing to go with ā€œwasnā€™t meā€ as long as the scrutiny isnā€™t really on them.

Nah

As long as there is somebody, these people arenā€™t backing Trump yet

Again they are afraid of consequence.

There may well be reason for cynicism regarding his motivation but nevertheless Iā€™m glad some conservative Republicans are saying things that might just possibly alert others of their mindset to the genuine danger that Trump (and Iā€™d say Cruz even more so!) pose to things that they - conservative Republicans - hold dear. Thatā€™s the only thing that might get through. Our liberal outrage about the awful racism, arrogance and sheer ignorance of some of their statements and positions will merit only a raised eyebrow ā€¦ but concern expressed by one of their own about things like this ā€“ handing over our revered and beloved military forces to these men, to do with as they will ā€“ at least has a chance to give a reality check and encourage a bit of sober thought. Whatever his motivation for saying so, Gibsonā€™s concern is a very valid one and something that should be considered by all of us.

Lifelong NYS resident here. Apparently Gibson is putting out feelers about running for governor and wants to seem centrist and reasonable since a lot of people are tired of Cuomo. Back in 2000 Hillary did quite well in his district and in 2006 swept upstate and he will need those same voters.

I have no doubt this guy will change his tune once he starts getting the usual right-wing death threats and primary challenge threats, since thatā€™s the way the base rolls these daysā€¦
