Discussion: GOP Pulls Off Brazen Court-Packing Scheme In Arizona

“More heads are better than fewer heads, especially when it comes to interpreting laws and the constitution,”

Mesnard continued,

“Unless of course it’s a nasty negro man trying to nominate a moderate to the Supreme Court. Then, not so much.”

The smell of hypocrisy coming from the GOP is so strong they qualify for their own superfund site.

It’s AZ, so who cares. This state has been long gone for a long time.

Yea really, they bitch and moan to no end about the little stuff Ds do and then when they are in power they do stuff that’s many times more bias and underhanded. NC since 2012 a prime example.

That’s okay.

It’s not like Republicans are going to lower people’s taxes. The purpose of the Republican Party is to funnel taxpayer’s money to their party buddies.

It’s bad enough to be a hyperpartisan and judge every issue by how much your side can gain from it. It’s treating everyone who has a philosophical difference as an enemy to be vanquished, rather than a fellow citizen to cooperate with to move the whole society forward. (Let me be clear: Fuck you, Republicans.) But when you politicize the legal system, you’re poisoning a foundation of the society in a way that’s hard to reverse. If people don’t have confidence that the courts are impartial, there’s not much left to have confidence in. Very, very dangerous road to go down. To conclude, Fuck you, Republicans.

From where I sit, in Kansas, where Kobach steals elections for Brownback and the legislature threatens to defund the state supreme court, this all looks like Republicans have decided that as far as democratic self-government goes, they’re moving on.

Well, when you can’t get what you want by making a case to the voters, then democracy isn’t the way you want to go, is it? And these are the people who’ve been screaming for years about stolen elections and ACORN and OMG a young black man was once seen standing outside a polling place and blah blah blah blah blah, screaming about unelected judges making policy when it’s policy they happen not to like, ugh, I hate starting my days with the outrage du jour, I really do. But that’s not possible lately. In conclusion, again, to reiterate: Fuck you, Republicans. You want to go to war with most of society and all right-thinking people, well, you asked for it.

Sure, it’s court-packing, but almost all–maybe all–other state supreme courts have seven or more justices. And it’s perfectly legal. It’s also something for the Democrats to beat Republicans over the head with. And if the voters don’t think it’s a big deal, then maybe it isn’t.

There’s a name for this kind of thing. It’s called democracy.

Now I just wonder what these Republicans would do if President Hillary came out for adding 2 justices to the Supreme Court?

Naaaaaaah, I know what they would ALL do…

Gosh, does this mean the Republicans finally have control of a state where they can consolidate their Vision for America?

  1. Abnegate all Environmental Regulations
  2. Legalize Slavery
  3. Establish Official 2nd Class Citizenship for Women
  4. Institute Shoot on Site Rules for Anyone Looking “Foreign”
  5. Oh, and to Make that Tolerant, Peaceful Set of Beliefs, Christianity, the Official State Religion (with Public Floggings and/or Beheadings for All Who Resist)

My god. My condolences to @darrtown and @azjude and all the others here from Arizona. Damn, I hope we’re able to fend off this kind of attack in other states.

I have said many times that we are in a moment of danger in the United States. A state of emergency. Younger people will have to vote. That’s the action that needs to be taken.

In 1942 it was worse. Then it was combat.

They STILL have not fathomed that rallies, protests and demonstrations are not the same as voting. The former three things speak to a juvenile desire to be seen by grownups as MAD and Not gonna Take It Anymore. First of all, the numbers of people who rally, protest and demonstrate (usually cumulatively numbered in terms of THOUSANDS OF PEOPLE) is much less than tens of millions of old, hateful racist xenophobes who outvote younger people in every state.

The Bernie thing is a good start…

The Arizona Judicial Council – a group of judges, court administrators, attorneys and public members that advise the judicial branch on policy issues – had voted to accept a deal that traded their support for the expansion in return for the pay hike and funding for other court programs, a vote that is now being criticized as a bad political move.

So the group who’s jobs are basically built around the idea of their unbiased good judgment were willing to sell their support for a pay raise and are now surprised that a pay for support deal with Republicans turned bad. So what changed? Is it that Republicans are already showing signs of backing out on the agreed to pay day or that they are worried about looking as complicit as they are in this mess?

“If the shoe were on the other foot, I’ll just candidly say if there were different person appointing, I might feel less comfortable,” Mesnard said.

“But it is totally not a political move. I’d just feel different if I wasn’t on the side that stood to gain politically from this move.”

It’s Arizona. They don’t let us vote.

Thank you TPM, now talk about AZ’s budget that was passed yesterday. It’s a goddam travesty on many levels. Talk about the $5 million given to the states two top public universities to set up a Koch named school dedicated to the runiation of public education. Or maybe the zero funding for “Kids in Need” healthcare program. Here’s a good on… $12 billion + in special interest tax loop holes the state does not collect while crying they cannot afford to boost k-12 or higher education needs.
Forgive me. I could rant for hours on all this.

If the judicial council had any gumption whatsoever, they would give the governor a list that did not contain any hard-right loons. But I’m not holding my breath.
