This reminded me of a great observation P.J. O’Rourke made when he wrote about Heritage USA, the theme park built by PTL televangelist/grifter/rapist Jim Bakker.
O’Rourke said he wouldn’t ridicule the faithful who visited the park because he thought that would be about as ethical as “hunting dairy cattle at close range with a high-powered rifle and scope.”
Thing is, that’s when people who went in for that kind of tacky, absurd stuff were seen as outside the mainstream and powerless. Now a gullible conspiracy theorist sits in the Oval Office, at least when he decides to show up, white nationalists are part of the national conversation and oppress people of color along both our borders, marchers chant “Jews will not replace us,” terrorists target non-WASPs and on and on. So it’s not like we’re beating up on the village idiot. We’re beating up an members of the town council who also happen to be idiots.

Sasha Baron Cohen is very inventive. Even my Mother liked him although she considered him to be very cheeky, like when, as Ali G., he interviewed some stuffy MP and, out of nowhere, asked the guy, "How is your balls?
But this stuff is just depressing. funny, but depressing.
The. WaPo review of the show disagrees. He dutifully clucks his tongue at this erosion of trust the show effects (If you can’t trust Sacha Baron Cohen who can you trust?) and explicitly asserts that is the liberal version of O’Keefe. Both sides!
