Are they able to claim compensation?

WTF? Are all Republicans natural-born thieves? We need explicit laws to properly regulate this out-of-control practice – with very severe consequences. The idea of getting permission to use artistic expression isn’t a new concept, Republicans. Of course, you people cheer the Female Trump stealing words from Mrs. Obama, so maybe I’m asking for far too much by asking that you seek permission of the owner to the intellectual property you wish to appropriate. My gawd.

Didn’t they use a Queen song the first night? That disgusted me.

They’ve appropriated Woody Guthrie’s song too

This land is our land, This land is our land
From California to the New York Island
From the red wood forest to the Gulf Stream waters
This land was made for me me me.

Better question?

Will they be able to collect?

And don’t take a post-dated check.

So the VP nominee Pence comes on to “You Can’t Always Get What You Want” by a British band called the Rolling Stones.

Trump comes on stage to introduce his wife to “We Will Rock You” by British band Queen headed by a bi-sexual from Iran or Pakistan (not sure which).

Trump’s daughter is introduced by “Here Comes the Sun” by the Beatles, another British band.

And then Trump left to “You Can’t Always Get What You Want”.

Doesn’t the Trump campaign like American music?

As I went walking I saw a sign there
And on the sign it said “No Trespassing.”
But on the other side it didn’t say nothing,
That side was made for you and me.

In the shadow of the steeple I saw my people,
By the relief office I seen my people;
As they stood there hungry, I stood there asking
Is this land made for you and me?

the really sad thing about using this song is that they only use the happy lyrics… they never use all the verses of the song…

The venue has a license from ASCAP and BMI to play recorded music. Royalties go into a pot and are divided among songwriters.

During the concert at the Lincoln Memorial before Obama’s inauguration in 2009, Pete Seeger and Bruce Springsteen did sing those verses (or at least the first of them), with the President-Elect and Michelle Obama right in front of them. I was blown away.

Does the estate own or control the rights to the song? I get being offended, but if they want to control how the song was used, they have to retain the right to control its use. Also, there is this who patchwork of laws regarding use and royalties for music when it is played.

I was hoping they could do more than object.

Law and order do not apply to Donald. He gets to do anything he wants.

A custom going back to Ronald Reagan’s quoting of Bruce Springsteen’s “Born in the USA” during one of his feel good speeches to an increasingly not feeling good population subject to his Presidency.
