Discussion: Franken Says He's Leaving Senate But Not Giving Up His Voice

Very sad day. And apparently not going over well with the voters of MN, either.

Did he exclude standing for a seat in the future ?

Hopefully, there will be many opportunities and a big platform for Frankenā€™s voice to continue to be heard. I think heā€™d win if he ran again and then, as the Republicans like to say, the voters will have decided.

Thank you senator Franken for you service. Your fellow Democrats in the senate did not treat you fairly. This senior married woman is sorry to see you go.

OTā€”

Whereā€™s the story on Trumpā€™s interview with the NYT??

Itā€™s a barn-burner of a storyā€”the interview is troubling and Trumpā€™s remarks are dangerous.

Also, Kirsten Gillibrand, who probably would have been a very viable candidate for 2020, shot herself in the foot. So this debacle lost two very important potential YOUNG (relatively) Democrats with bright futures. What a damn waste.

I do love how the Russia inquiry ā€œmakes him look badā€ but not not him, the raison dā€™ĆŖtre for the inquiry. God what an idiot.

Sheā€™s revealed herself to be a rigid ā€œthinkerā€ who cannot differentiate between what Franken was accused of doing and what Harvey Weinstein actually did.

Sheā€™s also pissed off 90% of the progressives in America.
Her national political career is over.

I hope the Junior Senator from New York, Sen. Defarge is happy with her knitting project. She should resign for lack of commitment to the basic principle of American Democracy, ā€œinnocent until proven guilty.ā€

I donā€™t think she sees it that way. She sees it as a victory and giving her platform a wider audience. Personally, I donā€™t think it is a victory, but I donā€™t think it was a shot in the foot for her, either. I do think in what will be a crowded primary in 2020, that her trying to coopt the #MeToo movement as her central plank wonā€™t give her the traction she will need.

Yeah, Iā€™ve commented about that on several threads. Its a real head scratcher that TPM doesnā€™t have this one up yet. I thought it would have been the front and center piece first thing this morning.

Yikes. Reading that, I either laughed out loud or thought, ā€œHoly crap! Heā€™s nuts!ā€

I guess twitter has been on a tear, some criticizing the reporter for lack of pushback and others saying the most information comes when Trump is allowed to ramble.

Sheā€™s not wrong.

ETA, we do need a post about this. Thereā€™s comedy gold in that interview, and I want to see the witty people here make hay while the sun shines!

These are the rantings of a disturbed individual who loves to talk more than listen. If he were ever to listen heā€™d learn that public opinion on the Russian investigation says the country wants it to continue. The delusional bubble only grows bigger.

ā€œAnother reason that Iā€™m going to win another four years is because newspapers, television, all forms of media will tank if Iā€™m not there because without me, their ratings are going down the tubes,ā€ Mr. Trump said, then invoked one of his preferred insults. ā€œWithout me, The New York Times will indeed be not the failing New York Times, but the failed New York Times.ā€

Isnā€™t it more likely that sheā€™s a political pro who saw a chance for the spotlight and took it? She was a blue dog in her House days, and then became a liberal in the Senate. Not hypocrisy, just professionalism.

Iā€™d like to hear more evidence that sheā€™s harmed herself among those who matter in the calculus of advancement within the Party.

And wait: Isnā€™t the NYT fake news? So was he talking to fake news? So was this a fake interview? This is so confusing ā€¦

Maybe he can get a job at Minnesota Public Radio. I hear they have an opening since they let Garrison Keillor go.

Yes, but I think she miscalculated, badly. And worse, because she aimed at a popular (still) member of her own party.

I hope you are right about this.

I want to know what government officials believe and value. The only real way to know this is to observe their behavior in office, but Gillebrand has been all over the map. Iā€™m not sure she has any values other than opportunism.

I donā€™t want her anywhere near the Presidency.
