Discussion: Fox Host: I Was Assailed With Insults After Backing Assault Weapon Ban

There’ve been a lot of spinectomies over there… but Shep Smith’s still employed, and he’s never backed down from any of his ‘off the reservation’ moments.

I remember reading a post from a former law school classmate of this woman who said that she was one of the brightest members of the class, and he didn’t know what had happened to her that she had turned into such a dim bulb. Now it looks as if she has started to reflect her earlier promise. I hope she continues with it and keeps going this way. If she and Megyn get together and form a posse that undermines the whole Faux raison d’être, it would be good for them, good for America, and good for tv in general.

Maybe it’s time for more of us to start getting real

Way past time, actually…

I absolutely love it. Should go up as a response tweet to all of Herr Drumpf’s.

I don’t think she was whining. I give her kudos to taking the position she did and then telling what happened to her afterward. You may not see it this way but that is progress, one person at a time.

I was wondering about that myself. Could it be that Murdoch is trying to play both ends against the middle?

Wow. That is pretty vile.

“And of course, there were a lot worse ones with tons of F-bombs and worse than that even,” she said.

C’mon Gretchen…that’s the crap Obama’s been putting up with for nearly 8 years now.
Quit playing victim, OK?

No, it’s pretty accurate.

She is a very intelligent and educated woman who decided to spend her career pandering to those who want her to shut up, do what she’s told - and she’s provided a good role model for the right-wing trogs to point to as an example for their trophy wives.

“That kind of intolerance is no doubt why politicians sometimes don’t say what they really think”

Perhaps so… except that you have nurtured and unleashed “that kind of intolerance”…

“Maybe it’s time for more of us to start getting real and try to come together to actually get things done,” the Fox host said.

That sounds dangerously progressive.

“Maybe it’s time to get things done.” Wow, she’d kidding, right? The Republicans have been blocking everything Obama does for eight years. And NOW it’s time to get things done? Assholes.

Gretchen Carlson is a Stanford and Oxford educated violinist who graduated with honors. I’ve seen her play dumb blonde stupid on many occasions, feeding into that stereotype with a flourish because that’s the job she chose to do. Meri isn’t far off.

EDIT: One particularly notable exchange was when she pretended like she didn’t know or understand the meaning of the word ‘czar’.

If the money is right the Fox people will say just about anything you want said.

I had a long, multi-day “debate” on Facebook too. I tried to reason with her, and she countered with odd bits of incoherent defense. She blamed Obama for letting the Orlando killer get a weapon but opposed any legislation that would impinge on her second amendment rights. We were talking past each other. At some point I realized she was very defensive and obstructionist, much like the GOP Congress. Finally, I said to her, that I knew she was a kind, loving person with a big heart ( she really is) and that I was surprised that she seemed not to care about preventing these massacres. I asked her what she would suggest we do to stop them. She never responded to that. Nothing. And this was after days of retorts to my every argument. I think I finally struck a nerve by appealing to her emotions. I think some otherwise caring people have to stay pretty detached from their emotions to stay loyal in their opposition to gun control. One almost has to suspend their humanity not to care enough to want to prevent these mass killings from happening again. I would be happy for this issue to become bipartisan, and not a Dem v GOP wedge issue. I welcome Gretchen Carlson or anyone else to join the cause.

i’ve awarded you my own nice post.

“Maybe it’s time for more of us to start getting real and try to come together to actually get things done,” the Fox host said.

have you noticed some reasonable views coming from a few GOP bigwigs? romney. kasich. hogan. graham. they desperately are worried for their party. and rightly so.

So Gretchen Carlson met her audience and it didn’t go well?

yeah… I’ve seen that but I’m cynical… wait until the wind (or windbag) changes direction…

OK, call me a cynic, but I’m not ready to high-five Gretchen just yet. The message at FOX is tightly controlled, by Roger Ailes, in their daily 8 AM briefing. NO ONE gets to just wing it and express an opinion that hasn’t been pre-approved. (@arrendis - Shep gets a dispensation for some reason, maybe because he’s an actual trained journalist? Or because FOX uses him to cling to the notion that they’re Fair & Balanced™?) Undoubtedly the strong negative reaction surprised Gretchen because the “dumb blonde” act she’s been pulling for years always won praise.

If Carlson (and Bill O’Reilly) appear to be inching in the direction of sensible gun control, it’s because they’re supposed to say it, not because they suddenly grew a conscience.

My prediction is that the two of them will make conciliatory noises for a while, then taper off if that doesn’t get them higher ratings or extra coverage in the MSM.
