Discussion for article #237208
¨“We have to make public policy with regard to the environmental policy,” Santorum, a devout Catholic¨ (emphasis added).
Ain’t a Catho, but if I were, I’d kinda resent ¨devout¨ being used as a euphemism for ¨cypto-fascist¨.
And: ¨“There are more pressing problems confronting the earth than climate change," Santorum said.¨
Why doesn’t he save us all some time and just show us the list of issues that Foster Friess has this cycle: that’s where his devotion lies.
“He would say he’s protecting the Earth,” Wallace interjected.
“There are more pressing problems confronting the earth than climate change," Santorum said.
I see. So, Santorum, a devout Catholic, is now going to tell the Pope what is the most important issue for His Holiness to focus upon. Might it be abortion? Gay marriage? Tax cuts for the wealthy?
“There are more pressing problems confronting the earth than climate change," Santorum said.
Yep, abortion.
“There are more pressing problems confronting the earth than climate change," Santorum said, “like making sure Americans are denied access to health care and forcing women who want abortions to get trans-vaginal ultrasounds…”
Yep. The more pressing problems for Santorum are crawling up women’s
uteruses, keeping the teh gays down and ignoring the poors.
Aide: Senator Santorum, the Pope is on the line. He’d like to speak with you.
Santorum: Yes, your Holiness?
Pope: F-you, jackass!
What Santorum et al. seem to forget is that Francis is not the Pope of the US. He is the Holy Father - Pope of Catholics throughout the world, and concerned with all of them (and non-Catholics as well). His pronouncements do not need to comport to US economic policy or even what is best for the US. Lack of food and clean water, poor sanitation, malnutrition and disease kill a lot more babies every year than abortion and the predicted changes in climate and sea level will only exacerbate those problems. If Santorum really cares about life, he should get on board with this Pope. Oh yeah, and we should stop our endless wars that kill hundreds of thousands of innocent civilians, but that’s another story. I am not a Catholic, but this Pope has important things to say for us all.
Have any of these talking heads asked any of the Santorums or Inhofes of the world what evidence they would need to see to get them to accept anthropogenic global warming? If you ask it fast, maybe one of them will admit it would take a command from the Koch Bros.
I can imagine the kind smile on the Pope’s face listening to Santorum giving him advice.
Santorum is not a biblical expert so he should be quiet about moral and ethical issues. But the Pope is a scientist besides an expert on moral and ethical issues. Santorum has met his match and he lost.
When it suits his political purposes, Santorum parades his religiosity and Catholicism. When it doesn’t suit his purposes and the Pope speaks out, he suggests the church remain silent. Q: What more do we need to know to disqualify him from the presidency or even being a candidate? A: Nothing.
“There are more pressing problems confronting the earth than climate change," Santorum said.
Of course there are. ISIS is more pressing, refugees in the Mediterranean and South East Asia are more pressing, Ukraine is more pressing. And ten years from now other problems will be more pressing. And so on and so on, until the day that climate change is the most pressing issue of the day. On that day, however, it will be much too late to do anything about it.
What does it take to get Republicans to see further into the future than the next paycheck from their sugar daddy, or the next election day? Nixon created the EPA. It is sad that a paranoid crook like Nixon would be a shining example of statesmanship in today’s Republican ship of fools.
in fact, he does have a degree in chemistry
While Rick’s just an amateur sophist…
A second class amateur sophist that is. There, I fixed it.
I wonder how ol’ Santorum would react if he was excommunicated by a pissed off Pope?
Admittedly, there are no grounds for that (heresy, blasphemy, etc.) but just to jerk his chain that would be hilarious.
Have to give Wallace credit for asking the question and pointing out the facts. Wallace could’ve went further, but choose not to.
WALLACE: You wanted only two income tax rates, 10 percent and 28 percent. Tax capital gains at 12 percent. And corporate taxes at 17.5 percent.
Here’s the problem: the Tax Policy Center said the middle class, on average, would save $4,000, while the top 1 percent taxpayer would save, on average, almost $350,000. And you would cut federal revenues by 40 percent.
Question: how do you pass, create, impose a flat tax that, one, isn’t going to gut the federal treasury, that’s going to raise enough money, and, two, isn’t going to be a bonanza for the top 1 percent?
SANTORUM: Well, first off, those numbers are based on a static model. That means that nothing is going to change in the economy if you create all sorts of incentives for people to grow the economy and for people to work with lower tax rates. And I just reject that. I mean, that’s just a flat earth way of looking at economic growth.
Yeah Santorum, you’re all for the working class all right. Pity your base is dumb enough to believe your lying answer. Those numbers Chris Wallace quoted are reality, not static. Obviously, reality is just something the GOP and their base can ignore or distort to fit their beliefs.
At one point, Wallace notes that “somewhere between 80 percent and 90 percent of scientists” who have studied the issue agree. But Santorum is having none of it, calling it a “speculative science” and saying that he doesn’t believe anyone who is so sure of their facts. “Any time you hear a scientist say the science is settled, that’s political science, not real science, because no scientists in their right mind would say ever the science is settled.”
So true. Some scientists allege people gain immunity from smallpox after getting a vaccination. Their science says a vaccine provides that immunity. They consider the effectiveness and science behind how vaccines work "settled". But we know they're deluded. Politicians must doubt the science behind vaccines. Vaccinated people could be protected from diseases because of the Magic Jesus Shield® they gain from prayer. The science behind the Magic Jesus Shield® should be studied. And not by the Pope!!! Grrr!! What the hell does he know about Jesus and prayer?!?!
It’s mildly interesting that Santorum, insanely obsessive about his religion most days, complacently waves away the Pope’s views when they conflict with a conservative shibboleth. Almost a cafeteria Catholic, there, aren’t you, Ricky?
The thing is, he’ll never hold elective office again. What’s really interesting is a Fox interviewer making the point that a high percentage of scientists think warming is real and humans contribute to it. Do they then accept the consensus, or are they just using it this one time to jerk around a candidate they think does more harm than good? It’s interesting to see the winnowing process happening. I’m reading that Fox no longer is an arm of the GOP; it’s the other way around now. Interesting times we live in.
Santorum is a typical conservative U. S. Catholic. They love to quote the Vatican when the topic is abortion, but remain eerily quiet when the topics are capital punishment, living wage, universal health care.
