Cakes. You have not paid for your wars, people are having their voting rights taken away and the Supreme Court will probably steal healthcare from millions but it’s goddamn cakes that gets attention.

Hurry up, 6th massive extinction. Just hurry up.

Damn, I would have baked that cake. I would have poured all my love and heart into baking their little hateful cake. Then when it was complete, I’d call the media and say “See? I baked this anti-gay cake even though I’m gay myself.” I would make a big deal out of it, and expose the hate and bigotry of this so-called Christian pastor. It would have been delicious.

I’ve decided after this pizza shenanigans that what the Christians WANT is to be victims. They love being victims. They know full well that enacting anti-LGBT legislation turns out the base and throws red meat at them. This week has more than proven to me that the best way to fight this is to not fight this at all. A majority of Americans support gay rights and really, it’s just a very vocal and very effective lobby that is playing into the fears of an already fearful Christian base. All you have to do is wave the rainbow flag and they shrink in fear and disgust. I think they’re just proving to everybody just how immature and childish they are with their anti-gay hate.

Haters gotta hate, as they say, and in this day and age, bigotry is very much looked down upon and public shaming is rampant. Just stop doing business with the bigots and soon enough they’ll either go out of business or come around and realize just how stupid they’ve been.

Not all conservative are stupid. But all stupid people that I know are conservative! hahahaha. What a bunch of rubes, these folks are, giving money to these scam artist from the right. It is almost unfathomable how outfits like WND, The Blaze, and folks like Huckabee come up with the most ridiculous ways to separate moronic conservative from their hard earned money. I love it!

Why is he a former pastor? Did he just get tired of guns, G_d and grits?

Maybe he converted but Joshua Feuerstein sounds way more Jewish than christian.

Then again, it’s Florida and anything can happen down there.

How does that work around here? I’m in a “time out” at C & L and have yet to hear back as to why/what and anything else. I bolted with the masses from HP way back when they mandated fb to participate. I see you only get a certain amount of posts per day here. What gets you booted and do they warn you or explain their reason(s)?

exactly. newspapers routinely turn down ads based on content. same with owners of billboards. what they can’t do is reject a message they would have no problem with if, say, the customer was a straight white christian.

you can’t force a kosher bakery to make you a pork bun, but if ru paul wants some rugelach, they better sell her some.

GR, do you have any idea what the gheys do with cakes? And ice cream? Children’s ice cream, GR! It would break your heart to hear of the foul impurity of their dessert practices.

The powers that be weren’t sure how it happened but he’s re-re-suspended. Silencio Beej! Shaddapa you face!

Mmm—rugelach…

The better response would have been, “OK, but it will cost you more for the specialty message”. Then make sure the cake is very dry and bitter tasting to reflect the message. Not making anyone sick but hopefully making it a teachable moment to those not too dim or consumed with their hatred to get the lesson.

This issue has gotten completely out of hand! I have been out of the country for a month and came back to find certain Americans at each other’s throats over idiotic controversies worse than ever…!

While I have no truck with bigots hiding behind religion, I abhor threats of violence, even implied. That serves no good purpose and may, in fact, turn people against your cause.
Run a business? Keep your religion to yourself. You are a businessperson, not a moral scold.
How about I refuse to fix your computer system because you’re a bigot? Would you like that?
The line has to be drawn somewhere. It’s WHO is drawing that line that’s the problem.

How about “echoes” the pizza shop episode since people are so hyped over the issue?

Where is the link to the godundme page? I want to kick in some cash!

Now, this minister or former pastor or whatever the hell he is has got a lot to learn. He doesn’t understand how civil rights laws work and he sure doesn’t understand the teachings of Jesus. What a twit!

I think the bakery did offer to provide icing and a squeezy bag so the “pastor” could write his own hateful message on his cake but he refused because, let’s be honest here, he never intended to buy a cake in the first place.

Yep. This is either a disingenuous trick or a misunderstanding of what public-accommodation laws demand (though I am not a legal expert).

From what I understand, the business operator only has to offer the same basic services/products to all legally-covered walks of life equally. They don’t have to provide any-and-all customization requests of their services/products to everyone. (And nobody is asking for that to change)

You want a cake - you’ll get a cake similar to any cake normally available. You want something custom-specialized, the business has no requirement. The customer can’t demand special shapes or decorations - just whatever is commonly available to everyone else.

I also don’t know if I’d say this situation ‘mirrors’ the Indiana pizza shop proclaiming they’d refuse equal service gay people - as TPM claims near the bottom of the article.

The Public Accommodations Law on the national level requires that a business cannot refuse to serve someone based on their protected status; however, if someone demanded that a cake be baked with, say, the words “Upon this Day, Jesus Christ our Savior was Murdered by Jews”, they can refuse due to it being considered an obscenity.

The “mirroring” here is a misunderstanding of the people involved. The baker is not refusing to bake the cake for the pastor…they are refusing to decorated it with an obscene message. The news is saying that the baker is refusing to bake the cake for the anti-gay pastor (and his ilk) the way the pizzaria is refusing to send pizzas to gay people.

Now, I should point out that a baker could actually refuse to put a message or a name on a cake made to go to a same-sex wedding and still manage to comply with many public accommodation laws as I see them.
