Discussion: Florida Bakery Says It Got Threats After Refusing To Make Anti-Gay Cake

Discussion for article #235035

The event mirrored the case of an Indiana pizza shop

No it doesn’t. It most decidedly does not mirror that case.

One is a request to dictate content – this Florida case – the other is a public business refusing to provide its product to a customer because the business owners are bigots.

While cake shops have to serve all fair paying customers, they can’t be made to carry forward the speech requests of said customers (i.e., they have to make you a cake, but they don’t have to put your hateful message on it).

I have to agree, except what I’m curious about is who set up the gofundme account?

Apparently, equating one bakery’s refusal to serve a customer who wishes to express their act of love with another bakery’s refusal to support an act of hatred … is the Christian thing to do.

It isn’t the Christian thing to do, but it IS the christianist thing to do.

If I was a cake shop presented with this kind of hate request, I would be happy to provide the requester with a blank cake in the requested colors and include in the price the icing in the color(s) the requester wants to add their own hateful message.

Don’t refuse them outright so they can play victim. Profit off the haters without participating in or supporting the hate.

Oh my goodness gracious.

There’s a grifter born every minute.

Edit: Didn’t read the article.

All I can say is that death threats from wingnuts sounds way more believable.

Do you even need to own a pizzeria or bakery? Couldn’t you just make up a story that Fox would like to tell? Crowdfunding off of bigots sounds like a good business.

I can think of a bunch of comedians, a lot of them gay, who could get a good six minutes of material on what constitutes “an anti-gay cake”.
(Start by making it look like Salon’s black hamburger.)

Come to think of it, I’ve got nothing against an imaginary “God”; it’s His fuking batsht-insane fanclub I wholly loathe and despise.

Death threats over a cake? Doesn’t seem very “Christian”

It’s not so much this one cake, but desserts in general!

I wish one or more of our legal experts would weigh in, but it certainly doesn’t seem similar to me. The few but celebrated cases so far involve a business refusing to provide a service to people exercising their legitimate if newly acquired right to get married. On the other hand the “ex-pastor” (story there?) is deliberately trying to get the bakery people to write a message on a cake they’re not comfortable writing. That seems more like something you could refuse without discriminating against a class of people. You’re just exercising your personal right to have some discretion over what you do. The law that’s been relevant so far doesn’t require you to do any damn thing somebody dreams up to ask you because they know you’ll find it offensive. It doesn’t require that a restaurant accommodate you if you walk in with a bag of dog meat and insist they cook it for you, for instance. It doesn’t require a bakery to write ethnic slurs on a cake. That’s not analogous to providing a service for a gay couple’s wedding that a reasonable person would see as a normal, legitimate thing, if I’m thinking clearly about it.

Yes, I had to reread this again, and now I’m back to my original grifter comment, except it’s redirected.

An anti-gay pastor in Florida.

Amusing.

Is this just a bid to get Christian help for an otherwise failing business? Let’s pass the hat for them. Let me hold the hat! Please!!!

TPM: You need to fix the link to the WKMG site in the LiveWire item. It is prefixed by the TPM address, so merely re-directs to the TPM front page…

Our mothers told us to choose carefully what we make an issue of.

Horrors! A gay man wants me to make him a cake! I fall upon the thorns of life! I bleed! Lord, what shall I do?

Really, pal, is this the worst thing that has happened to you?

Also, in regards the WKMG link, it is valuable to follow it (via the Mediaite link) - it is clearer, and has an …interesting comment thread of its own.

If the gay guys could do it with impunity, they should punch this guy in the snout.

Go Fund Me gets a pretty good percentage of that money.
