Discussion: Family Dog That Jumped Fence Shot During Child's Birthday Party

Discussion for article #227961

Within his rights it would seem. I’ve had strange dogs attack my dog while walking on public property, and even in my own yard. However this guy was obviously “itching” to prove his manhood. No reason to avoid walking anywhere he wants while packin’

Pepper spray would have been the better deterrent. But obviously the guy has a small penis.

Where in the article does it say that the man and/or his own dog were being “attacked”? Only cowards and madmen and fools shoot dogs as a first response.

Sit. Lie down. Roll over. Stand your ground.

Good doggy.

People who feel the need to carry a gun are constantly subconsciously looking for situations that will validate their belief that they need to carry a gun and are going to run every slightly out of the ordinary thing that happens to them through that filter.

Necessarily, these are people who conflate the right to own and carry a gun with a right to use it any time they feel the slightest bit threatened or scared or startled. And, of course, the worst of them are going to be the ones who conflate the right to own and carry a gun with the right to use it any time a situation arises where they think they can plausibly contend that they felt threatened, scared or startled when, in fact, what they were really feeling was stoked that they finally got to shoot something.

Because if a sane person in a sane country was concerned about a house with a dog that lost it over the sight of him walking his own dogs, he’d rethink his route. But this is Wayne LaPierre’s America. We’re just allowed to live here. Until someone decides we’re a threat and shoots us, anyway. And in Wayne LaPierre’s America, the whole point of carrying a gun is so you don’t have to do things like change the route you use to walk your dog because you have a by-god right to walk in that place and the penalty for infringing your rights is death.

If you’ve ever actually seen a dog fight you know a gun is perfectly useless because of the risk you’ll shoot your own dog. This asshole clearly chose this route hoping he’d get a chance to use his penile extension to kill a dog.

And that, incidentally, makes him the kind of guy who really shouldn’t be allowed to have a dog of his own.

Isn’t it time America started arming its dogs?

Oh, boy – this isn’t going to end well, is it?

“In response, Martinez’s husband ran inside to get his own gun, but by the time he returned to the scene the shooter was gone.”

Really? THAT was the smart thing to do? “More guns being involved will make this better” was the dude’s first thought? Jesus fuck…it’s like peoples’ frontal lobes go into immediate and significant atrophy the moment they purchase a firearm…or perhaps it already started and that’s what resulted in the purchase in the first place. Chicken, egg.

The only think that stops a bad dog with a gun, is a good dog with a gun. Are you a good doggy? Who’s a good doggy? Yes you are!

What kind of a dog owner wants to injure or kill another dog?

My dogs and I have been on the receiving end of 7 attacks by loose dogs before I got smart and started packing bear spray. Even the worst attacks resulted in no physical damage to either dog.

Using a gun in such a situation says loads about the shooter and almost nothing about the dogs.

First, pointing a gun at unarmed people mourning their wounded dog is not a right, it’s assault with a deadly weapon and should be prosecuted as such. If nothing else, that much seems clear from the facts in the article.

I must admit as a dog lover and dog parent, I think I would need more information to pass judgement. My heart goes out to the people who lost their dog. On the other hand, I’ve also had very irresponsible neighbors allow their big and vicious dogs to get loose and charge my ten pound dog, and there’s virtually nothing I wouldn’t do to protect my little guy in that situation. Knowing more about the size and breed of the two dogs would paint a clearer picture of what transpired.

Shooting a dog sounds like an awful thing to do. On the other hand, imagine if the man had watched the escaped dog kill his own dog… This one isn’t clear cut to me based on what has been presented.

As a dog lover and dog owner and with my dogs the victim of many loose dog attacks, I still don’t see the logic in the shooting.

Yet another example of the insanity we have released by allowing people to walk around packing heat. Is it just me or are people resorting to using guns because they CAN? Other people’s dogs have run up on me while I’m walking my dog and I have never had the need to get violent.

We are replacing common sense and civility with weapons.

Martinez also told the Post that the man pointed the gun at several people as they gathered around the fallen animal.

If that part is true, this scumbag might soon find himself in a very scary world when he no longer has a penile extension with which to bully others.

What if the loose dog was an untrained pitbull? We used to have neighbors who kept two pitbulls and never bothered to effectively domesticate them. Their teenage son would walk them down our driveway and the dogs would get into a stalking crouch and try to sneak-up on our dog and then need to be restrained. We eventually complained to the HOA.

If a dog like that got loose, it could not only kill a small dog, it could kill a person. Dog owners do bear some responsibility for keeping dangerous breeds, training them, and keeping them locked-up or on a leash.
